Why not, when the end outcome is exactly the same, why not go for the cheaper option
and as Rory says, it's not actually the trial, it's him confirming that his is who they say he is and that he understands taht he's being charged with murder.

I dunno, feels like the trial should be run in the most optimal way and feeling te pressure of being in the dock rather than tucked away ina cell could reap different rewards from cross examination
