Also, I don't know if you saw Rich Hall's superb programme on American Indians in 'film', but it would appear that they really couldn't give much of a shit what you call them. cf people calling Eskimos 'Inuits' when Inuits are a specific tribe and thus calling them all by that name is likely to be way more offensive, like calling Canadians 'Americans'.

Amazingly, he's not wrong about this.
