Meaningless thread time
We played carols in orchestra practise yesterday. You know what that means....6 weeks til I get out of the country for a bit!

So whinge about people putting up christmas decorations too early or about your job or imaginary wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend or something

So, yeah, futile gestures against the world thread, really

I am happy for a change. Daughter home from hospital. PHEW.
I am celebrating this with a beer and a DVD of Foyles War in my hotel room. There's a really thick fog here, so no point going out, everywhere is dead tonight.

I have given up moaning about Christmas, it happens regardless.
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:34, Reply)
Get used to it.
In the next few years you're going to start hearing about xmas in October.

Ah. Well done Gonz.
How's your new laptop?
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:41, Reply)
It's good stuff, still not 100% sure if I should have gone for the 2.3 or the 2.6 though.
It was
- 2.3ghz with 256gb hard drive*, the rest of the specs the same, £1799**
- 2.6ghz with 512gb hard drive*, the rest of the specs the same, £2299**

The processor gets a 10% performance gain, and I figure for £500 I can handle using external/network drives for stroidge, and that things like my music collection is all Cloud so that takes up no space.

Got the whole thing on finance, 0% for 6 months, so that's £300 (or would have been £380 if I went for the bigger one) extra I gotta find a month. £300 I can do, no probs, £380 and although I could do it, would rather not. Plus the old laptop will cover a load of it too as Apple retain value.

What do you reckon? Right thinking or crazy?

*Before anyone goes "HOW LOW?", it's pure flash memory, there isn't a single machanical part in this machine.
** Before bawking at the price, look up spec-for-spec laptops from other brands, aside the usual Apple Premium, remember you've got a screen that nobody can come close to matching... it's, I think, 4x 1080p inside a 15" frame.

(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:51, Reply)
I have to tell you Gonz,
those kind of prices make me cry.
But you're the product expert, and if you think they're valid prices, then fair enough. And if you can afford one and you want it, then why teh hell not? You're young, you're free, you're forever alone single...
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:54, Reply)
There is a bit of vanity in getting this, there is no doubt about that.
But think of it as a cab driver who's bought a new Merc... he's sitting in that thing all day every day, personal and profesional use (but taking out that passengers can shit things up). And fuel wise, I don't have to re-buy/re-learn any software, eaither, which would cost more than the machine itself if I went back to windows.

I found out the other week what my work charges for my day-rate, then did some maths, then thought to myself "Fuckin' 'ell, I _am_ good at what I do", which has given me a bit of an ego-boost that let me justify getting one of these =)
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 20:17, Reply)
Shame you can't get a 2.6 with 256gb.
Apple charge a stupid amount for extra gb, considering you can get a 2tb external drive for about £70.
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:55, Reply)
Yup, and these ones you can't really upgrade yourself eaither, the components are too tightly woven.
I reckon the bump to 16gb ram is worth it though, I think thats £160 on top if I remember right... you won't get two 8gb chips in there for much more than that.

Not relivent to my interests, but there is no CD/DVD in there either.
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 20:07, Reply)
I have 16gb ram on my Lenovo, as I run some heavy db software and often have some graphic files for work open at the same time.
I am using my DVD drive tonight for the first time since I got this machine two years ago to watch a box set in my hotel room as all the Uk sites (even the ones I pay for such as Netflix) won't work with an non Uk IP address and Polish Tv is shit. Even if you can understand it, which I can't.

I'd take more ram over a DVD drive despite this.
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 20:12, Reply)
Is the DB local? Normally the work is done on the server, but it can still take up a lot locally.
Streaming is the future, but it is relient on a connection. Just so you know, iPlayer on iPad can download shows for offline viewing; not sure of the others. Or there is iTunes too. if you ain't bothered about legalities, then I can show you how to download stuff, it's quite a simple process.
(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 20:22, Reply)
db is local.
Didn't know I could watch iPlayer content offline. Am back here in a couple of weeks so have got time to investigate. Ta.

Edit: couldn't care less about legality. I used to use letmewatchthis.com but it has gone to shit.

(, Tue 13 Nov 2012, 19:44, Reply)
Probably not, assuming you want to change the colour.
You'd have to get it bare metal sprayed which, for a car of that size, you're talking 4 or 5 grand, easy. You're unlikely to sell it on for 22k or more.
