There are squillions of self-referential things that you don't pick up on the first viewing. Cloverfield is full of them.
And in Lost, almost every flashback scene has some kind of reference to the six numbers, or another character, or something about the island.

At first read, it's a story - good, bad or indifferent.
To an English Lit graduate, it's an insightful allegory with hidden motifs and repeating themes.
You get what you want out of entertainment.
