it is powered over the USB cable.

If you get ones that aren't bus powered they are a bit cheaper, but not that much.

I see, I have one of those, only 750 gig though
isn't there some theory that something saved digitally doesn't exist unless it is in 7 different places or something? due to the chances of deletion/destruction?

I work on two or three copies.
Also, you need a way to recover the data from whatever you've got it on.

So having 30 floppy disks but no disk drive is a bit pointless.

probelm is you could have the photos etc on your laptop and backed up on a hardrive
but if your house burns down they are both gone, you need them in another location as well...
