It's an engineering thing.
The standard cables are cheaply manufactured, so you'll get badly made connections, which is the point at which you'll lose quality. Once you're in the price point of getting decently manufactured terminals, you're pretty much at the pinnacle. Anything more expensive and it's pure profiteering.

£2.99 and £10 wine - chalk and cheese. £20 wine and £2k wine - at best cheese and cheese, quite possibly cheese and vinegar.

Pretty much, yeah.
Law of diminishing returns, innit. It'll be the difference between a Stilton and a Roquefort. At best an expert might be able to tell the difference, but most people will think "it tastes like blue cheese, you lying fucking snob"

the thing about cheese is that there's a lot of difference in the texture
whereas wine is all wet
