How come, right - how come
When flying from London to Australia, you go over Europe, Middle East etc instead of West over the North Pole and then down and stuff?

I'm trying to get the distances as I imagine it's more - does anyone know?

Becasue then it would be further?

I think its to do with the curviture of planet....
When going that far into the southern himisphere, it's no longer quicker to head north.

Probably.

Science!

GET ME MY BUNSON BURNER ! I HAVE A SCIENCE TO DO !

Get a globe and a piece of string
You will find that the curved route is shorter (even though it seems longer) also going in that direction I would assume that you avoid having to fight against the gulf stream and therefore save fuel.

Yes. Ill-thought-out - that's the problem with my question.

(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:39, Reply)
Probably because of science.

This is the correct response.

prevailing winds and the posibility of having to land in the arctic is something went wrong?
assuming all distances were equal (which they're probably not but it's roughly the other side of the world so it'll be close) I'd make as much of the trip as possible go over land in case of emergency landings

This sort of sensible answer has no place here.

(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:38, Reply)
sorry, I'm trying to be more sensible.
because being silly was not going down as well.

british airways are going to be so embarrassed when you ring up and tell them

(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:35, Reply)
I figured I'd offer them a decent price to tell them how to rectify it first.

(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:38, Reply)
haha

(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:42, Reply)
Because no one likes you.

Nah, I mean, your mum probably thinks you're alright,
And if you have a girlfriend I'm sure she's green good of you by now, but no one important gives a fuck about you.
(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:41, Reply)
God does.
He's important.
(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:46, Reply)
Cheers, all.
I figured it would be further; didn't think about the Gulf Stream etc.

And the whole arctic thing.

Or fuel.

This is probably why I'll never be a pilot.
(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:37, Reply)
The real answer is because you can't fly directly to Australia
so your choices are fly to LA and then carry on, or fly to Singapore/Dudai/Thailand/China and then carry on.
(, Mon 5 Aug 2013, 16:41, Reply)
Because you have AIDS
