CAR CHAT
If I give my ex the Volvo I may get an Alfa Romeo 159 sportswagen. Is Alfa's reliability as dodgy as is claimed?

Yes. I looked. The write ups on them were "looks good, breaks down"

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:35, Reply)
Shame. Nice car.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:36, Reply)
They're not going to break down every other minute though, are they.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:37, Reply)
Yes.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:37, Reply)
Not sure what to get instead.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:38, Reply)
Just get the Alfa.
As yet there haven't been many reliability issues. Just a bunch of "ooh, it's an Alfa, probably going to break!" shit.

Or I might get an old 635 CSi.

Lovely cars.
Seriously heavy on fuel.
(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:45, Reply)
I don't do a lot of mileage. Plus classic car insurance.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:46, Reply)
If you don't do a lot of mileage, you don't really need to be worrying about reliability.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:52, Reply)
I do when I'm driving my daughter.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:56, Reply)
OK, well it sounds like you're trying to talk yourself out of anything interesting
so I'd suggest a diesel 3 series. Bullet-proof, powerful, good on fuel.
(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:58, Reply)
If you don't do the mileage
don't bother with the diesel. You'll pay several grand more for, say, a 335D than for a 335 petrol. You'll take decades to save that back in fuel unless you're doing 5 figure mileages a year.
(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 13:17, Reply)
No

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:35, Reply)
Yes

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:35, Reply)
Don't know

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:36, Reply)
Why are you giving her the car?
You want to give her a kick up the jacksy, that's what you want to do.
(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:37, Reply)
She needs a car for Micro.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:38, Reply)
surely Micro is too young to drive.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:38, Reply)
Shut up Wilf.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:39, Reply)
So why isn't she buying one?

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:41, Reply)
Part of the divorce settlement innit.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:42, Reply)
Ah.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:45, Reply)
because she can still sponge one off Battered.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:43, Reply)
Beautiful cars, built by bent spastics.

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:41, Reply)
I've had three and none of them have broken down.
I may, however, simply be lucky.
(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:44, Reply)
Any electrical problems?

(, Tue 6 Aug 2013, 12:47, Reply)
Not as such.
Well, the 166 I had once or twice had all the dials instantly go off the scale for a few miles or so, which I assume is a computer fault - but otherwise, they were fine.
