I use
Azureus now named the easier to spell Vuze

azureus.sourceforge.net/

It's a bit torrent download management system so you can easily keep track of what you are downloading and super easy to set up. Then use a torrent search engine to find what you are looking for click download, Vuze will open up ask you where you want to save and away you go!

Torrents for teh win....
...as others have said. However, if you must MUST lower yourself into the fetid pile of shit that is peer to peer filesharing, avoid Limewire, BearShare, Kazzaa etc etc. They are all virus ridden spyware stuffed pieces of excrement.

There is a freeware bit of software called Frostwire that's actually ok tho, so that might be worth a look if you want to spend 48 minutes waiting for the new Coldplay single to download only to find it's either corrupted half way through or is actually an illegal jpeg of an 8 year old's fairy closet.

Bittorrent wise, look at Isohunt, piratebay.org, or torrentspy. ABCtorrent is a good program for actually downloading stuff.

Another word of warning tho - if you are indeed totally clueless, avoid all of this. Its riddled with spyware and viruses and illegality and stuff. Once you properly understand virus checkers and spyware and stuff of that ilk, gaz me and I'll run you through it.

Azureus got shit when they filled it with crap

cool
i'm trying vuze, but don't know how you can tell what kind of file it's downloading. for example, i want to download south park to watch at home (i don't have net there yet), but it keeps downloading avi files, which i can't play on my computer. my other half said something about codec packs, but he's offline now for a couple of hours, so thought i'd check the collective minds of b3ta.

thanks so much everyone!!

I have an old copy of
Azureus so it runs pretty well. I use mininova for most stuff although I do go through Torrentpond just to compare seeds. I may look in to that utorrent if it's good.

Oh also Vitc if you haven't got a decent virus checker I recommend the free and awesome AVG. Please note Norton does not constitute decent.

Oh and sounds
like you need to download Divx as windows media player won't actually play any media except audio by itself.

Soulseek.
It's free and it doesn't have the bugs and Teh Bad AIDS that seem to plague Limewire.

Grumpy old Usenet
I have to admit that I tend to find all filesharing stuff a bit of a faff, and so have fallen back on good old usenet.

It meets pretty much all of my needs, and with a good web-based service like Easynews ($10/£6 a month for 20 gigs), which has a good search tool and previews, I've not had to resort to P2P for a couple of years now.

@GammerBadger
...or download VLC - no need to ever download codecs again.

Nice simple interface, no funny shaped buttons like some of the players out there.

...and it's cross-platform too.

.
I also second Azureus/Vuze. Vuze is just a new version of Azureus with a fancy new interface but you can revert

"Azureus got shit when they filled it with crap"

You can turn of the fancy new Vuze interface and go back to the classic Azureus interface.

As well as the torrent sites mentioned above, try www.mininova.org/
