It's more about saving print costs and not having to throw away literature when machines are upgraded/superceded

I think that's more the fault of repulsive salespeople forcing their cards into the hands of clients who clearly aren't interested than of the medium itself
you could write your number on a fag packet and if someone cares about your business enough they'll hang onto it
