The new cat has just digraced himself
And I don't mean by crapping in the corner either.

He's just opened up the hamster's cage.....

we'll have to wait until the morning to see if the poor hamster has survived the mauling. We had to shake the cat to get him to drop the little rodent.

The cat is in disgrace - I know it's his nature but...jeez.

PJM had a Partridge moment explaining it all to the kids - in the morning the hamster will either be running around in his wheel or...erm....it'll be....ah.....

Yes. Quite.

Fluffy murdering cat.

And he still looks at us with those adoring eyes.

how did it open the cage?
is it an old style metal one?

The plastic type ones are more difficult for cats to open, but also harder to clean properly

Is it wrong that this raised a wry smile from me?
I mean yeah, sad for the hamster. But it looks like your cats gotten himself some wiles during his time on the mean streets.

It's a modern Rotastak style of cage
and the cat somehow managed to remove one of the circular bungs that keep the hamster in and safe.

She's survived the night but I think we'll have to take her to the vet this morning to be put to sleep.

The cat continues to be very, very affectionate. I suspect the hamster was a gift for us - he was coming up to the bedroom with it when we found him.
So I suppose we should be flattered that he didn't just eat her!

To be honest, that would have been cheaper.

You lucky bastard
I wish I had a cat now. I've got two Gerbils, and they're indestructible. They're both more than 3 years old now, and they just WILL NOT DIE.
They've survived my little girl throwing them around in their little pink ball, escaped a few times, and I dropped a couch on one of them as I was trying to catch it.

They are quite good for frightening away burglars though, because they fucking stink.

The results of the Hamstergate Inquiry
Well, the hamster is moving about and although she couldn't use her hind paws when I retrieved her from the jaws of the cat last night, she's able to move about now. Her left front paw is broken and she's got some puncture marks in her flanks, but she's taken food from the twins.

She might need some time and TLC.

The hamster house has these plastic bungs that plug the exits, one of which I found on the floor last night and was obviously the hamster's point of exit. Unless the cat has opposable thumbs (I've checked and he doesn't), then we reckon the hamster pushed it out from the inside.

Chickenlady is interrogating interviewing the cat under oath.

I'm sorry
but that made me laugh like a loon. Having owned both hamsters and cats, I have to say I prefer the cat. The first hamster we had was a wee darling, but the second - Godzilla in miniature form ....

I suspect I have the same type of cage, and those wee round bungs do slip quite easily. Although if the cat is really smart, he could have turned the bung with his teeth.

PJM
Sounds like she'll be alright then :)

You going to make a splint for the paw?

Bert

My Gerbils rock. I've taught them all sorts of tricks. And they answer to their names (all 4 of them respond to their own name only)

Aww Legless
I'm sorry mate... Your post yesterday had both myself and Poulet Madame welling up.

Ethelred

I checked online for making a splint, but I was advised against it. Rodents tend to chew splints off, plus it's impossible to set a tiny bone properly so we've put her in a small tank so she doesn't have to climb and have put some antiseptic on her wounds.
