On American Idol?
Or Americas got talent?
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 13:18, Reply)
No, on American Idiot.
I really hope that my predictions are right and Caribou Barbie will be consigned to the dustbin of history...

(Every time I hear her speak I get flashbacks to the movie "Fargo".)

If Obama gets in.
I will give all American B3tans a big kiss : )

Even if you voted for the other one.

I was invited
to a birthday/election party tonight. Might have to go just so we can all rag on the McCain supporters.

Want to see something truly sad? Check out their desperation in here: richmond.craigslist.org/rnr/

It's almost embarrassing to read some of the crap they're posting...

God Please
Let Obama win, hopefully in a massive landslide so that war hero and speccybitch can have their stupid grins completely wiped off their faces by 6am.

Jeez
Craigslist is a scary place.

Hmmmmm...
From CNN: McCain: 'I will never let you down'

...did he just rickroll us?

So, what's the atmosphere like over there?
I know my friends in NYC are loving it, but they are all left leaning arty types, so probably not representative.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 15:09, Reply)
I really hope Obama wins
Mind you, I heard some builders in the queue at the chippy last Friday discussing opening a book on how many assassination attempts there will be in the first year. Sad.

Really hard to say.
Here in the office there isn't much chatter going on, so I suspect that I'm surrounded by Republicans for the most part. The few that I know to be Republicans are looking a bit grim and aren't saying much.

The party I was invited to is a bunch of twentysomethings, so I'm pretty sure they'll all be for Obama. It'll be held down in the Fan, which is the arty/liberal section of town anyway.

The thing that will be really of interest to me this weekend will be hearing from my parents. The little Adirondack town I come from is staunch Republican territory. If Obama wins as I expect, there will likely be much wailing and gnashing of teeth up there.

The thing that I did not expect is that Jerry Pournelle, noted sci-fi writer and political conservative, has been publishing some pretty sketchy things on his blog, including things from the Daily Mail. I'm a bit disappointed in him.

EDIT: and regarding assassination attempts: I would be willing to bet that there are plenty of them in planning now, and there have probably been quite a few stopped that we never heard about. He and his family are very brave when you think about it- I don't doubt in the slightest that they're in mortal danger from the racists.

I wish I could vote.
that way I get a sticker saying "I voted" and free stuff from Starbucks, Krispy Kremes, Ben & Jerry's etc.

As it is, I'm merely a resident, and with the time frame for Citizenship I can't vote till the 2016 election.

Loon, sounds to me you voted the right way ;)
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 15:26, Reply)
@ wbm
yep, I was hoping for lots of free stuff too :-) am going downtown to have a go at ben and jerrys anyway.

@loon, my whole lab are republican leaning christians, and a couple of them have started praying together. It's, um, interesting.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 16:02, Reply)
Thank god
none of them here have started doing THAT shit.

For a time someone was leaving Fox News articles in the stall in the bathroom. I finally responded with the graph of national debt vs year, which clearly shows very steep increases during the Republican years and either leveling out or decreases in Democratic years. (I found the graph online, but have replicated it myself using US government figures and a copy of Excel.) I haven't seen any articles since then.

Then again, most of the guys here fit the stereotypes of engineers- they talk about little other than work. I tend to stand out a fair bit.

I'm sure you have similar types over there.
We have the Christian Conservatives here that the Republicans have been scrabbling after for the past ten years or more. It's gotten to the point where Republican=Christian wingnut in most minds. Palin is a prime example.

I think it's finally starting to really bite 'em in the arse.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 16:17, Reply)
yep
don't get me started on the whole christianity thing, I've almost bitten my tongue off since I moved here, being surrounded by fuckwits, I mean Southern Baptists.

We have one democrat voter in the lab (plus 4 foreigners who are all making it clear that we would be pro-democrat if we could vote), and the rest are republicans - it's kind of scary.

The worst bit is the reasoning behind voting republican - in most cases it's:
'Obama is pro abortion and anti gun'

No, he's pro choice, and anti morons having easy access to guns. there is a difference. Plus which, why do they have a problem with a fetus being killed but are quite happy to watch an innocent bystander be killed by a twat with a gun?
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 16:22, Reply)
That's right, you're in Georgia, aren't you?
Damn, you've got it even worse than I do, if half of what I hear is true!

I've worked with fanatical Baptists- fortunately only a few- and don't envy you in the slightest.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 16:26, Reply)
ya
lovely Georgia. I'm actually in a very liberal, university town, so there have been equal numbers of obama/mccain signs in the front gardens, but we drove through north GA into tennessee at the weekend, and saw nary a glimpse of a democrat advert.

And although everyone here is very NICE, I still want to hit them when they ask me to join them at church, or pray with them. Twunts.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 16:34, Reply)
the good news is
if obama wins = yay
if mcCain wins = heart attack upon realising he won = election = Obama

we can't lose hehe
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 17:30, Reply)
^nope
If Macain wins = death = SARAH PALIN in charge = end of the world as we know it.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 17:35, Reply)
Just looked at the craig's list link
OMG!!

I've got relatives in the US but they're all staunch Democrats - none of these scary types!

Mind you, we can hardly take the moral high ground here in the UK...Daily Mail anyone?
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 17:39, Reply)
Though I must admit
that my parents have been staunch Republicans in the past, over the past four years they've become so disgusted with the Republicans that they're for Obama. So I guess I can't really say that any of us are staunch anything- we just vote for the guy that we think will do the best job.

Had it been, say, Colin Powell vs Hillary Clinton, I would have been voting Republican for the first time in my life.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 18:58, Reply)
Hmm
Yes, I'd be in that camp with you Loon...Although my relations are probably being monitored by the CIA. One of my cousins is a personal friend of Clinton....

That said, I'm very proud of them - there are four of them and they're all in their 60s and 70s now but when they were young they went on civil liberties marches, one was in the Peace Corps and even got to meet Golda Meyer and Haile Selassie - I'm going to go off and google the correct spelling for that one...

Just floating the idea
My boyfriend just suggested that if McCain wins then we should seriously considered invading America. I'm not totally sure who the 'we' is, as I don't think that Brown is that decisive, and we as a couple have a lot going on at the moment with some urgent and essential flat repairs, but he did suggest I raise it on B3ta. These things have a funny habit of taking off here.

Hopefully TRL and himjim have us covered and none of this will be necessary.
(, Tue 4 Nov 2008, 23:03, Reply)
I'd be for it.
You lot can't make a bigger cock-up than we've made with Dubya at the helm... and Palin is cut from the same cloth.

Thus far Richmond is the only area of Virginia that's reported in and was mainly Democrat. A tiny island of sanity in a sea of fools...
