Hello there. Hope you techy types can help. Firstly, I must confess ignorance when it comes to most things computer. I have what may be a problem, but am unsure of how to remedy it.
Something called AntivirusPro2009 has appeared on my laptop. I keep getting pop-ups saying I have spyware and that my computer is infected. I don't know where it has come from and have no idea of how to remove it. I do hope someone here can help out!

Sorry for the brief answer but pub posting from my phone.
Avp2009 is spyware and NOT to be trusted.
Install Spybot search and destroy from www.spybot.com
Run through the install and let it update and so on. Then run a full scan and remove what it tells you to.
Hopefully this will get you clean enough, failing that I'd next install ad-aware from www.lavasoft.com and update and scan with that.
Between the two of those you'll sucessfully remove 99% of the crap around and as a quick google of avp2009 makes it seem common these should hopefully clear it fine.
Good luck!

But this was some time ago when the software first appeared.

I can't access either site using Firefox or Internet Explorer. I did already have Spybot installed but it won't start up when I click on it.
I'm searching for solutions but every time I come across something that might be of help the page won't open.
Hello there piston_broke. I'm afraid I don't know what a full reinstall is or in fact involves.
I'll keep trying. Thanks for your help thus far, folks.

Okay. I am re-installing spybot and installing ad-aware from download.com, which I am able to access. Fingers crossed again!

the only option is a complete re-install.
Restart your computer with your windows CD in the drive, reformat the harddrive (it's simple instructions appearing onscreen)and install a fresh copy.

@flesh
Thanks for the advice. I'm running ad-aware at the moment. If that and spybot don't work, I'll attempt to re-install. Although I do have to warn that I'll probably be back on to ask a million questions! But thank-you for taking the time to find a solution.
@ Little Tiny Bill.
Was your name not Baconface Bill earlier? Or did I spectacularly mis-read your post? I'm proper confused.

Hello there everyone.
Firstly I'd like to thank you all for taking an interest!
The state of play, unfortunately is that Antivirus Pro 2009 is still on my laptop.
I managed to download Ad-Aware, update and run it. It did seem to say it had eradicated Antivirus Pro 2009, but it was quite evident that the problem still existed. I can't run Spybot. When I click on it nothing happens. I can't re-install it because I make the necessary connection to the Spybot site. I've downloaded and installed Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, but as with Spybot, nothing happens when I try to run the program.
I'm at a loss what to do, to be honest. I feel as though anything I try to run to weed out this thing will not be allowed to run.
Agnostic Antichrist, thank you for your kind offer. I'll gaz you just after I post this.
Once again, thank you to you all.

Hello everyone. I've managed to sort it!
Firstly I had to run this:
www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm#uninstall
I'm not sure why, but I had to run it twice. However, I still couldn't manage to get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to work. I switched off my laptop and left it for the night.
This morning I tried again and the program would run but not update. So I ran a scan and then re-started the laptop. This time it permitted an update, after which I scanned again.
I was then able to install and update Spybot and after that everything was back as it should be. I'm just about to leave AVG to scan but thought I'd let everyone know.
I really do appreciate everyone offering advice and am genuinely touched that complete strangers took the time and effort to help out.
Thank you.
By the way, these are the programs I downloaded in case any other non computer literate people get afflicted by this problem:
