It doesnt cost phone companies a penny for you to send a text its a long process but here we go.
every mobile phone sends a signal out 1500 a second to connec tto the nearest signal tower so when you send a text it gets put into one of the 1500 signals thats being sent so they don;t have to pay for opening up a channel for you to communicate because theres a permanent one open for signalling.
Soooooo they still charge 12p when they shouldnt't!

Why shouldn't they? It mightn't cost anything to send a particular text, but you aren't paying for that. You're paying for the service. Additionally, the infrastructure has to be paid for somehow...
I hope for your sake that you never start a business. It'd be bust within days if you only ever sold things at cost.
And, yes, I am an unrepentant lefty.

... If people are willing to pay price p - and they obviously are - it'd be daft not to expect service chargers to charge p, wouldn't it?

obviously if it was me i would charge even more but as im not i might aswell bitch about it.

They have to pay for infrastructure, I don't know who owns all the masts. Is it like railtrack, where one company owns the infrastructure, and Orange/Vodafone/3 et al all rent bandwidth?
Then there's all the shops, marketing and call-centres.
I wonder how much it costs to handle a phone-call, or a pic message, or video calling. That must use a fair bit of bandwidth.

suprisingly not that much compared to the prices people pay. the main cost to the companies is the bandwidth for video calls and goin on the internet but its still worth payin to download a bit of porno on your phone

Though a statistic on the ITN site says that in Britan alone, 52 billion texts were sent in 2007. A bit of a convenient number, but still an awful lot of 12 pences.
On New Year's Day 2007, 214 million messages were sent.
Also, a lot of those will be in free minutes/text tariffs, of which a lot of people don't use.
Last month I used 36/150 mins and 315/750 texts. However, 3 do give me a £10/month loyalty discount.
and a free phone.
