Travel Advice (New York, New York!)
Morning all!

I'm going to be heading over to New York for my 30th next year and am wondering what would be the best time of year to go?

Also wondering if anyone can recommend any good flight price comparison websites?

I would say Spring
As during the Summer it is unbearably hot, during the Winter it is unbearably cold, and during the Autumn the air stinks of what can only be described as deep fried goat and if you need a breath of fresh air the best way is to open a window and stick your head in a building.

I was listening to the audiobook of Mostly Harmless on the way to NY friday.

As for the actual question it's very variable now, Friday when I landed is was about 25 degrees and beautiful sunshine but the weekend it has been pretty cloudy and in the high teens. [/travel blog]

Kayak is the best flight comparison site.
moneysupermarket.com has the best list of flight comparison sites too. However, when it comes to actual book, book directly through the airline, not the link the site gives you - can often save a few quid.

I'd suggest april or september during term time to reduce the crowds a bit.

NYC
Off season is cheapest (revelation huh?) - you can usually get good deals on flights in early October/April when the weather is still good enough to walk the City. I always go direct to BA/Virgin/AA and book well in advance where possible, if you keep checking in you will find deals.

For hotels go to priceline or hotels.com (use the US versions for best prices) once you find your place contact the hotel direct to see if they can beat the price or have any specials going on.

If shopping is on your agenda last week of Jan is superb for bargains. I bought a £400+ coat for £100 about ten years ago and it's still rocking on, to this day...although that was in the 'fucking incredible exchange rate' days...

Cold though it is, if you're correctly dressed it's not such a biggie (that said the fatal flaw in the Roman-style grid street plan becomes abundantly apparent: those avenues become wind tunnels from hell). Summer is stifling and you won't get half as much done.

If you're looking for nightlife etc Manhattan is no longer the city that never sleeps: Giuliani put paid to that shit some years back. You're better off in the other boroughs (accomodation is instantly cheaper too) like Brooklyn.

New York is fucking brilliant.

For attractions
other than the biggies (Ground Zero, Empire State Building, Central Park, Statue of Liberty) you could also try:

- museum of natural history (has the coolest planetarium)
- grand central station (architecture = incredible)
- battery park
