Help needed.
I’m (desperately) trying to build a basic webpage that’s for internal work use; it also needs to have a message board on it. Hosted from my hard-drive (initially, until it gets hosted by the intranet support people) – the problem is, I don’t have a fuckin’ clue where to start or what the hell I’m suppose to do.

I have pointed this out to my task-master who said, ‘you know about computers, I need it done today’ despite the fact I know sweet FA about building webpages and message boards.

So, my question is, do any of you know of any (free) easy-to-use templates that have a message board on them? I’ll happily dick about with the colours and images, but I don’t know how to build the thing.

(I have found various templates for both web pages and message boards, but no ‘all in one’ type thing and I have understanding of the instructions for putting one with the other)

TIA.

Can't you steal
the QOTW code?

Nah
Faq says it's not open source, although there's a link to something similar.

I'd love to steal this code, it's perfect for what I want to do on my site too.

The word 'steal'
implies a disregard of the fact it's not open source...

I use that word loosely of course
It's a good, simple, solid system without all the bells and whistles, which I like. Minimalist, functional and all that. Like what the web used to be before they built all these housing estates.

Perhaps
You should have a word with cr3- he does a lot of the coding on this site.

Gaz gonz,
he made a similar site a while back,

Are you running a server on your local computer?
If so, which one. Who runs your intranet? Can they help?

Depending on what server you're running on what service, there're various bits and bobs out there.

Ah, you've lost me
All I needed to do (I say 'all' - what I really mean, is 'somehow, I need to try and...) is get everything uptogether and leave it all on my drive until its been tested, then everything can be handed over to people who know about this sort of thing for them to host.

What I'm not able to do, is to have it hosted remotely until IT have given it the thumbs up.

Mullered.

You'll need
Some sort of server
A kind of message board software that'll run on that server with the correct services installed
More than the amount of time it appears you have to get it up, running and tested.

Personally I'd hold my hands up and tell your manager it's outside your capability.

Break it down
Right,

Not a simple task, if you want to do it properly, you will need to do the following:

Install a web server (apache, IIS or similar)
Install (and configure) database software (MySQL, SQlite or similar)
Install forum software (I recommend phpbb)
Write your website (the forum front end will already be there as part of the phpbb install)

Full configuration and fine tuning can be done later but the setup above with basic functionality is just about achievable in a day (depends how comfortable with server software you are).

Let me know if you want more specific pointers.

Gaz Rob
for the b3ta bunker source code site. It's free and you should be able to get it up and running in a day minutes, according to them, just by following the instructions.

EDIT: fuck it, he'll be busy today. It's deadline for the newsletter.

use this instead: www.phpbb.com/

Thanks for all the replies
I've decided to tell my manager to go fuck himself.

This is far too complicated for a Friday, especially a Friday that'll see my wanting to go to the pub lunchtime.

I'm probably going to be made redundant at the end of this month anyway, so he can do it himself.

Thanks all.

Good luck with all that.
Especially the pub bit.

you're way over your head, I'm afraid
but to answer the question directly:

1. You need to turn your desktop PC into a part-time server (without losing all your files, obviously). Quickest way to do that is to install XAMPP.

2. Now you need to install some forum software as part of your shiny new server setup. Vanilla might work for you.

There's also a few posts from people getting this exact combo to work.

Ooh look, a mod!
*faints*

New/own post highlighting on QOTW please! Like the other boards. We've asked elsewhere but no joy.
