Does anybody know if there has been a response to this by the government?

I suspect it will be a lot of waffle that comes perilously close to having no actual content whatsoever, but on painstaking examination will prove to actually be addressing an entirely different straw man.

"Blah blah blah previous governments blah blah security blah blah not a waste of money at all blah blah of course Gordon Brown is the right man to be leading the country, even though he has no democratic mandate for power blah blah blah"

blah blah vote for the party not the person blah blah party chooses their leaders independently of the people blah blah.
As much as I dislike Gordy, he has as much right to govern the country as Blair did.

I should have said "democratic right". I didn't mean to imply he was capable.

...promise to tighten security, thus hiking the cost of an unnecessary ID Card from a ridiculous amount of money to an even more ridiculous amount of money, while at the same time making it extremely difficult for people NOT to have one.
Stealth tax?
Moreover, they'll sell off all the details on the national database to the highest bidder (this bit is actually provided for in the legislation).

if it's linked to a central database then it should notice if any changes have been made to the card and launch some predator drones to the location of the card.

With x-ray body search and a scratchy cliche robot's voice. "You have twenty seconds to confirm your identity," they'd say, then POWBZZZZTPOW with their extendable cattle-prods. Take that, illegal immigrant!

Why do they need the information on the card at all?
( , Fri 7 Aug 2009, 11:34, Reply)

that the ID cards won't actually get round to being started until a general election comes around and then the tories will scrap the whole idea.

Why do you think my dad got a job as a copper, I needed someone on the inside to re-jig things! :)
( , Fri 7 Aug 2009, 11:45, Reply)

...the Tories would probably make it cost even more too.
( , Fri 7 Aug 2009, 11:47, Reply)

I'd prefer some kind of completely evil dictatorship to the bunch of cretinous dullards that we have to choose from.
( , Fri 7 Aug 2009, 11:48, Reply)

Even if they promised to scrap it during the election then did a U-turn afterwards.

...I promise to run the country with an iron fist and grow a fearsome moustache to boot.
I'll also have a few civil servants and bankers shot too.

I promise to massacre anyone who stands in your way or holds some sort of opinion with extreme prejudice.
I'd like some sort of attack helicopter task force. And elite stormtroopers.
All hail Emperor PJM, may he live a thousand years!
