So how are you all coping with the end of the post-weekend?

Oh well, enjoy payday.

But this week specifically is horrible. I basically have my workload tripled this week.

And because another of our departments are running so badly that most of my team have been drafted to try to get them through the end of the month.

so I don't have to worry about that. But the downside is that my company has too much power to decide that I shouldn't take holidays on certain days.

Not very well, to be honest. I should be cock-a-hoop because I'm going to the dentist this afternoon and to see stage version of Quadrophenia tonight. And last night in work I was drunk and we had the jukebox on with all my favourites. Tuesday is just giving me the blues though. How's you?
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 8:35, Reply)

I'm all Rock-n-Roll thanks. Are you just a bit hungover from last night? I've got a copy of Quadrophenia but have yet to watch it.
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 8:37, Reply)

I think I know what's up, but I'm hoping my psychic powers are shit and that I'm wrong. I first saw Quadrophenia when I was doing my A-levels (during the Blitz) and I still have the one I taped off Bravo. Not sure what this stage version is going to do. But I'll have lovely scraped shiny teeth by then so I can sit tonguing the gaps if it's rubbish.

It's where you have a hunch but you consciously avoid the hunch because you know it's wrong.

There may be much more scope for things that won't happen in people's lives, but because you'll be the first to do so, you'll have this entire niche in the market to yourself.

did a bit of work about a year ago that has been used for something else. I did the best I could, but it still wasn't particularly good, although good enough for our purposes. Now there is a possibility that it will have to be reviewed by some others (the company who make the software I used, i.e. the experts) who will undoubtedly find numerous problems with it, causing the client to be pissed off with us, and potentially wasting a load of money.
I'm hoping that we've provided enough evidence that it is decent to the client, so they won't go for this external review, but until I find out I'm bricking it.

Yeah, I hate it when things like that happen. Although the stuff I'm doing is internal to my company, I find that some of the things I do can go unused for months before someone actually tries to use it and finds a problem with it. By then, my mind has moved onto something completely different.

I'm normally really calm and relaxed about stuff, but this has got my stomach in a knot. There's bugger all I can do about it (other than try and make the thing work better on the sly just in case it does get reviewed) and it's really getting to me. Stopping me from doing other work.
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 9:19, Reply)

And yeah, I also find if I think too much about one task,
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 9:22, Reply)

we just didn't have enough of a budget or enough time when I first did the work, and I didn't have much experience at the time. Our clients are being pretty obtuse as well, which isn't helping matters at this stage.
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 9:24, Reply)

I find the internal tools we use are often done by people with not much experience, leaving the end-users with a product that's more of a hack than a piece of engineering. It usually either keeps crashing or has a horrible user-interface, yet somehow manages to do the job.

I haven't slept properly since Saturday, and I just. cannot. be. arsed. Despite it being payday on thursday (which is all that's keeping me going really) I've budgeted badly this month, which means next month will be even tighter and I've got stuff to be doing and just bleeeeeahhhh.
*Sigh*
Hows you?
( , Tue 25 Aug 2009, 9:15, Reply)

Have you been staying up late or just not managing to get to sleep?
Spent the weekend out in Oxford with my walking-group and even got to try punting for the first time. Even managed to do the punting for a bit despite my fellow passengers plying me with booze.

as burning the candle at both ends! No, I'm far too boring for that sadly - I just haven't slept well for reasons unknown, and it's annoying me because I don't function well on less than 7 hours.
I did bugger all at the weekend really, just pootled around in the sunshine. Next weekend I'm at a wedding though - first one of all of my college friends. I'm getting old :(

One thing I find helps is that if you try and get out of bed or go to bed at the same time each day, it does help you get your sleeping-pattern back. Once it's back, I can still cope with the odd night on the town or lie-in every so often. Used to do that when I was a teenager, but the demands of a University social-life put an end to this.
Was at a friend's wedding myself recently. Hardly go to weddings, and the last wedding I went to was in fact my same friend's previous wedding.

I've just posted two posts to this week's QOTW. They're more psychology-hacks than techno-hacks, but I thought I'd post them anyway.
