A few years back, my brother spanked a few hundred quid on a formula one kart - a rapid 250cc engine welded to a frame with the usual configuration of wheels, steering and pedals. It had the same power-to-weight ratio as a proper F1 car up to 100mph, and I don't mind telling you it scared the fuck out of me because it was so phenomenally fast.
What's the fastest you've ever been on the ground?

in my bosses old volvo, the sort the cops use.
the astonishing thing was how quick it went from 90 up.
edit: that was with me driving, fastest as passenger was about 140 something in a porsche 911 turbo. the acceleration forced my face into a big grin.

Makes me feel like I'm in that scene in the centrifuge from Spies Like Us.

A mate of mine has an RS4 Avant. I've not been in it yet, but did have a ride in his old S4, which was quite fast enough, thank you very much.

cos there's no way a pillion would be able to see the clocks at that speed...
not without the wind breaking your neck!

The rear seat was higher than the riders seat, The rider had his head right down and the speedo was one of those digital ones with big numbers but yes I was holding on for dear life feeling like I would fly off.

in my Mondeo diesel estate. Down hill with a following wind. Just before the engine needed replacing for some reason.

in my old MGF late at night on the M42. I could have gone faster but it started to get awfully twitchy and I decided that I'd proved the point and could slow down now thankyou.

downhill, with a following wind. Felt like it was going to take off

In my old Fiesta XR2i (what? I was 18, I was allowed to be a prick) plus the speed of the Earth's rotation
( , Mon 28 Sep 2009, 12:57, Reply)

I just looked it up on a website, I'm not really clever at all.
EDIT It was the Earth's rotation on it's axis measured at the equator

that we're measuring speeds relative to the earth. There's no such thing as absolute speed.

Mmm...sexeh.

because the gear stick was hurting my leg.
Then we went home.

My leg needed to be there though. It was terribly inconvenient.

in an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, round Ty Croes circuit on Anglesey. It was many funs. Also 120mph as a pillion on a Kawasaki-something-or-other, which was less fun as I was truly convinced I would die.

in my Honda Accord.
I cracked it so no-one else had to.
I know absolutely nothing about cars but my friend has a Skyline (???) and accelerating up a London street made me feel extremely sick it was so pokey. Fascinating, I know.

what are its origins?
EDIT I've been searching the QOTW archive, and after reading a few Honda Accord 'jokes' I got so bored I've just eaten my own leg

because the guy was a dick.
it was on the bullies question I think, some guy saw a bully from school who was now a smackhead. drove into him in his Honda Accord, and pinned him to a wall, then chucked him over the wall.
now the Honda Accord is the international vehicle of justice.

I'm 1337, whereas you are merely average

it truly was. The bloke was an epic helmet and the mixture of self-aggrandisement and outright lying made for extremely entertaining reading.

to having become a black belt in some martial art or other also thrown in for good measure, but I may have imagined it.
( , Mon 28 Sep 2009, 14:26, Reply)

it become heavier over 100mph then?
On a public road, it'd be the occasion involving the M45 at 3am, a Jaguar XKR flat out in top gear (the new 5.0 supercharged one) and a lack of speed limiter.
On a track, it'd be 202mph in a Koenigsegg CCX-R at Nardo proving ground.
( , Mon 28 Sep 2009, 13:46, Reply)

We compared the power-to-weight curves of the kart and a 2005 F1 car and up to 100mph they matched.

however my dad is a fleet buyer, and says the most fun he has ever had was thrashing the bollocks off of a fiat

He rolled it on the little roundabout near the supermarket causing all manner of traffic chaos. He described it as like driving a Scalextric.
