Someone is bound to know this...
In Excel is there a way you can select a cell while writing a formula that will automatically add the $ to the cell reference?

as in =(A5*$E$1)

tried google and I can't find anything on there

Why do you need to do it?
I usually find that the best way is to write the formular first and then add the anchors after. It gives you more flexibility.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:14, Reply)
to reduce the time it takes me to input formulae by a few seconds
I use excel a lot, with some complicated formulae and would like to be able to hold down a key and select a cell and it automatically stick the $ in it.

Could you not name the specific cells?
then you could just write the name into the formular.
That wouldn't work over multiple sheets though. The only other way I can think of doing it is a keybound macro.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:18, Reply)
it tends to be over multiple sheets unfortunately
also, it tends to be that I only want to restrict it to a column rather than a row (E$1) for example, so naming them wouldn't help.

Can't be arsed with doing a macro for it, was mainly wondering if there was already a way

You just mess about with wave machines don't you?

(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:33, Reply)
I wish
I make computer models to model flooding from rivers, the sea and waves and create flood maps. Also design flood defences, do flood risk assessments for developments and stuff. Have designed bits of lifeboat stations too.

(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:45, Reply)
glossy and sleek are two words that cannot be used to describe me

Which bits?
Is it the croissant platforms?
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:40, Reply)
they are platforms that could be used to hold croissants
so technically, yes
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:42, Reply)
Excellent

(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:45, Reply)
That's a shockingly technical question there

I would ask Catface
as he has a scarily in-depth knowledge of all things Excel. However, he started his new job yesterday, doing scarily in-depth things with Excel, so I can't ask him as he's at work. Pity, because he has whole new levels of autistic savant when it comes to Excel.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 10:58, Reply)
it irks me somewhat that I don't already know the answer to my quesiton
is I am pretty good with Excel.

How's it going?
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 11:04, Reply)
yeah, a'right.
I spent my sick leave this morning following a youtube tutorial on how to apply eye make-up.
Verdict: it's more hassle than it's worth. I am a scruff and will always be a scruff.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 11:25, Reply)
fair enough
not a fan of makeup in general, particularly not shovelled on, however dark eye makeup does tend to encourage the horn.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 11:34, Reply)
It's dark.
It looks like I've been punched in the face in a coal bunker.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 11:39, Reply)
I'm not a make up fan either
Fortunately my gf wears a minimal amount. My rule of thumb is that if it's visible, she's wearing too much!

I'm not good at being smart either. I can't even tie a tie properly.
(, Tue 10 Nov 2009, 12:27, Reply)
Try f4
It's one of the function buttons and it allows you to select the row, column, or cell depending on the number of presses.

So it's:

click in cell
press f

carry on

But it's been years since I've used that pile of crap.
