We have a lot who use my local, it was rammed with them yesterday, hardly any were drinking, and a lot were talking about their cars. Cars? How can they afford cars? I assume it's the bank of mum and dad.
Students should be drunk, and live on kebabs, and lager. True.

The local ones in Edinburgh were like £5-6 a go. You can't be eating that every night.
The £1 pints were nice though, food-wise it was more LIDL's 12p loaf of bread and plain pasta from Tesco.
For lunch maybe those Tesco Value sueprnoodles which were 6p a bag. That's the way I rolled.

So I stuck to Guinness and drank 1 pint to my mates 2. I didn't have a car but nearly everyone of my peers did. This was 10 years ago.

In Scotland (at least) the debt is fixed at inflation.
So presuming you go into a reasonable job, the so called interest on your debt doesn't actually *increase* your total debt. It is quite simply by far the best value loan you will ever get and can be paid off in incredibly small amounts over decades. Nor does it affect your credit rating, not that that matters to me right now.

but in England from what I've heard from the teachers I know. People are put off by the size of debt involved and there's only so much "it's not really a debt" and explation of how easy it is to pay back that they can say. It is putting people off.

There's someone else who gets it!
I'm a lucky old bastard who got his degree before they started charging. In fact, I got a Student Grant to help me live like the Viz character of the same name.

but I'm now paying 6% on mine. So good value, yes, but not exactly free. More than half of my current repayments goes on interest, so at this rate I'll be paying it off for decades. You won't really put a dent in your loan until you're on the sunny side of £30k a year.

This. I'm not having a rant at students in particular, a lot just annoy me.

they tend to have about 3 or 4 cars per household. They are all newer than every other car on the street with a few exceptions.
I hate Exeter uni students. Fucking Oxbridge rejects from Guildford. with their stupid "Exeter. Probably the best university in the world" stickers.
They are all awful people. with popped collars, messy bleached hair and ugg boots

upturned collar Oxbridge rejects at St Andrews too. I don't care how much money pater has in the bank, if you can't say thank you to someone who holds a door open for you you're a failure as a human being.

in spades. The upturned-collar cunts have started taking over Imperial as well - do they not realise they're ruining what was previously a haven for all the geeky social rejects?

But I am also rather nice, and mater and pater always made me pay my way. Most of my friends are like this and have had to find there own way in life, which is then only way to really make something of yourself.
Everyone I've met who is propped up by Mum and dad ends up fucked as they just don't understand how life works!
As with any area of society it's not fair to tar everybody with the same brush.
EDIT - I have never popped my collar!

But a lot are well annoying. A lot of the bar staff are ex-students, they say one of the best things about graduating, is the chance to moan about bloody students.

but really it's thinly veiled jealousy that they can get drunk on Wednesday afternoons!

and was dealt with in a similar fashion by my parents. I didn't much mind.
My main gripe is that they have too many freaking cars, and I can't park near my house.
(, Thu 12 Nov 2009, 11:50, Reply)
Apart from the bit about you not being able to park - that's your own problem there, I'm not involved.

I'm an old bugger who got a grant. But I also worked when I was a student, and never got into debt at all. Most of that was due to extreme tight-fistedness, to be honest!
I didn't have a car though. And how does one go about popping one's collar? Is it like popping one's cherry, but less fun?

Societies and that.
But have to get their drink from the bar. They always look scared when entering the bar.
And last time about three of them decided to congregate around my stool when I nipped out for a tab, they looked at me as if i had two heads when I asked them if i could get my stool back.
I graduated in July, and they're already starting to piss me off.
