Southampton.
I'm looking at moving to a new job; what's Southampton like and where should I avoid? How about living in the New Forest and getting the train to work?

I live just outside Southampton
As do a few other B3tans, like Ancrenne.
Avoid:
Thornhill
Some parts of Shirley
Etc etc.
Living in the Forest is a good idea, if you can afford it, but fuck all to do in the evening. How old are you? If you want a little nightlife, then you are better off being Bitterne/Shirley/Portswood way, as the taxis down here cost megabucks.
Southamptons ok, its what you make of it, just don't think moving to the Isle Of WIght is a good idea- it's most definitely not, I can assure you. Feel free to Gaz me if you want a drink to say hello to Southampton.
Oh, and the football supporters are just a quiet bunch, never any trouble, unless they play Portsmouth. Then it's open warfare.

The closer you are to the nightlife, though,
the closer you are to the students. Portswood is a case in point, as is the Polygon. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing overall, but I find living near the students a bit rowdy at times and I am one.

Most important thing to remember is to not live near Burgess Road. It's just not worth it.

Oh, and I'm 34, not fussed about English nightlife having lived abroad for years, don't follow football or much sport in general, and use my tastebuds professionally, so tend to be quite picky when it comes to food/drink/taste in general. :)
