Today's lesson
Don't clean things.

My mrs had spilt lemon meringue pie filling on the hob the other day, which had hardened to rock-like surface. While trying to clean it earlier I pulled the knobs off, and on putting them back on something broke. Now the hob doesn't work and the fusebox goes bang if you try and flick the switch.

Now I need to get a new hob (after trying and failing to fix it) this basically means I either spend £100 on a really shit electric hob like the one I'm replacing, or I buy a new fancy cooker which will eventually form the centrepiece of my fancy kitchen, a couple of years down the line.

one of the switches that controls a ring has broken
had to open the sucker up to get at it and see if I could put it back. answer was no.

then tried disconnecting that ring, but that still didn't work

write to the manufacturer and get a cheeky replacement
even better if it is still under warranty

not even close
I'm assuming it was put in at the same time as the rest of the kitchen and wiring and stuff, which makes it 8 years old or so

in that case
it may well be time get a new one, january sales and all that. i always prefer having a seperate hob and oven, it gives more options with your layout, plus the fact cookers are wildly expensive, or at least they can be for a decent one.

EDIT to say, i may be a hob snob, but i couldn't have anything but gas, cooking with electrickery is a pain in the hole.

I want a couple of ovens, and the space in my kitchen being what it is
I have to go for a freestanding 60cm one, otherwise I'd lose too much worktop space, or compromise my overall kitchen design.

I've decided to get a ceramic halogen hob if possible. I'd prefer gas, but as I need to get it sorted v. soon I don't want to have to get a gas man in to sort out the pipe work.

Anything is better than what I've been working with though

Right...
You have my sympathy, your hob saga reads like a Carry On script, and how much should I pay for a griddle pan? I'm on my phone.

Someone I dogsat for last year had one. I was most impressed when she produced a shit ton of food for me to eat from it
I was only there for about 3 hours, but she'd filled every compartment with food for me.

A dog, a Rangemaster AND a shitload of food?
That's like some sort of heaven.

Oh my god you should have seen the house. It was amazing. Lovely people, I wanted them to adopt me. Dog died a few days later though :(

my mum has a Brittania range
I'm getting one of those when I get a big enough kitchen.

Mind, I could theoretically have one now, but I can't justify buying a cooker more expensive than my car.
