RE: Designing and building a website for a small start-up business - 4-5 pages - nothing too flash - need to create decent SEO to direct business in.
Question 1. Considering I know how to switch my laptop on/off, set up a network, and many other similar functions is this something I could do myself from a book?
Question 2. How much should it cost to get it done by a professional?
Question 3. Any tips/advice?
Much appreciated.
Oh - and Happy New Year to you all.

2) a lot but there's probably a few people on b3ta who could do a decent job cheap.
3) Don't have splash screens, frames or animated text.

if you are then learning the ropes while making it could be worth while.
Or if you plan to do another website at another time.
If not fuck it, pay someone to do it.

mine turns over 1.5 million a year and cost about 15k. You're best off engaging an agency to handle your Google Adwords and SEO as well - you'll never be able to properly stay on top of it yourself, and could waste quite a lot of money getting it settled down, too.
Well, well worth the expenditure though. Utterly essential.
EDIT: and Happy New Year to you, sir.

1) Do you have any code or design experiance? If not, I reckon it would all look a bit 'geocities'.
2) About £250, which is about 3 days work. Plus about £100pa for hosting and domain costs. (I normally bung that in on the first year).
3) If you do the copy (the words on the screen), I'd do the rest for you, for the above costs. I personally find SEO isn't that important on a site of your size, there are going to be 1000s of people doing the exact same thing but with higher budgets, and you won't be able to compete. You're better off, depending on the buisness, using AdWords and local media advertising (local websites and newspapers). Also, remember, you're company is going to have to change all the litrature (buisness cards, brochures, anything) to include the website.
Hope that helps.
