Righty-oh, I need some advice, from my favorite interneters.
As I'm sure you're all aware, there is a current International Credit Crunch going on, as such, finances are scarce and lacking at best. I wish to rectify this situation, on a personal level, and as such, require steady employment.

I *think* I'm going to be offered gainful employment with bare-but-true fiscal rewards, such as cash. This is a job at the cab office. I'm hoping to be given an IT role, as their head-honcho is moving on, but I have a feeling I'd also be doing what I was doing before, answering phones and doing a bit of controlling, but mostly answering phones. It's a short-term answer to a long-term problem, which never works in the long run. However, it'll get me out of a spot of bother.

I don't really want to do it, but It'll be good for now, and there isn't anything to stop me looking for other stuff in the mean-time.

What do you lot reckon?

If you're microsoft certified you shouldn't be working in a cab office.
do some leg work, there are jobs around.

Yeah', you're right. I'm bloody good at what I do, I'm just useless at managing myself.
If I had someone manage me, I'd be fucking awesome.

Totally going to apply to everything and anything semi-IT-related today. Even go to Temping agencys.

Oh man, you're totally screwed
you should consolidate your debts, drop out of uni and get a job

Edit - Sorry, actual advice. You need money/job and they are offering you money/job. Welcome to the suck.

The advice I got
was that, if you're looking for work (and particularly if you need the cash) then it will probably look better on your CV/application if you had a series of short-term jobs rather than signing on because you were holding out for something better. It sounds like it's a fairly casual job so it won't be too much trouble to quit when you've found a job you actually want to do. So if it won't quite destroy your soul to do it, better to go with what they're offering and apply for something more satisfying in the meantime.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:31, Reply)
this is pretty much what I was going to say
as long as the job doesn't get in the way of looking for something better, and won't ruin your mind, then take it
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:36, Reply)
Luckly, I've never signed on before, not even when I was propper-ill.
There were huge gaps, due to that sort of thing, and offline stuff, but I've done a few impressive things since then, so hopefully that'll sort me out.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:54, Reply)
In all seriousness, I think you really fucking hated that job before, so since you'd essentially be going back into the same role but with some added bits here and there, you'll soon hate it again.
I would accept it for the meantime as you know you can do the job standing on your head, to get some money coming in, but keep looking for better jobs that you'll be more suited to.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:36, Reply)
I think you're totally right on that.
I've really got to pull my finger out and get it sorted.

I think I'll accept the job, but spend the week-days acting like job-searching is a job in itself, ie, go full steam.

I'm not proud when it comes to work, I'd do most things, but I really need to grow the fuck up and get a decent job.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:44, Reply)
I've done shit jobs in my time G0nz, but hey if it gets money in then you've got to suck it up until you get one that you really like.
Then when you do just slowly poison your way to the top ,)
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:48, Reply)
... and then there's the job... WAY HAY.
Yup, sometimes life sucks like that, but you can't find the dimonds without wading through the mud, or something like that.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:52, Reply)
Do it to earn enough to live on
But don't do so many hours that you're financially happy, but emotionally unhappy.
Set a limit. You'll soon find a job more suited to you if you can't afford life's little luxuries, like pugs and Subways.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:38, Reply)
But roota
we need people to earn more so they can give more

(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:16, Reply)
Yeah', I think you're also right, about getting the ballance.
Just the weekends or something like that, will earn me enough to keep my head above water.

If [offline stuff that you know about] didn't happen, then I'd be OK, but it's not, so I'm kindda fucked. Luckly, I borrowed quite a few bob from The Bank Of Mum, so I'm not fucked-fucked, just fucked.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 11:51, Reply)
I like your terminology!
But yeah. I hope that plan works out. I think it should.

*slaps back*
Yeah, hope things work out for ya big guy.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:06, Reply)
Well, this
I'm in a job but wanting to move on to greater things. This is taking an exceedingly long time so in the meantime, any money coming in is absolutely essential to buy me time to keep on looking.

At the end of the day I've been saving enough to go jobless for a good couple of months but I hope it never comes to that. If I go straight into another job I'll have a bit of cash in the old savings for the future when I come to the inevitable same situation.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:01, Reply)
Speaking as someone working in a cab office
who meant to be here for a maximum of six months to get me out of a hole while I look for something else, and now I've been here for more than two years and it makes me want to eat my own face every single minute I'm here. I was under the impression that you really hated working there and I think you're right - you'll probably end up a phone jockey again. I dunno what else to suggest but I recommend you don't go back to something you actively dislike. I'm never coming back here again after this.

EDIT: I'll clarify this a bit. I'm never coming back here again because it's the easy way out. It's a comfort zone which just about pays my bills and removes my motivation to find another job. Should I ever find myself out of work again I'll work like fuck to find something, anything, but not this.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:05, Reply)
Wow
Apart from this cab office part this sounds just like me!
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:07, Reply)
But I am you, just more handsome.
In the fifteen minutes it took me to finally post that, everyone else have really good advice. Plus, I just realised I'm only hanging on here to keep me in cheese and biscuits til I get my business off the ground in the spring, so don't listen to me.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:10, Reply)
I know what you mean, but I'm really in need of the stable income, in my break I've used up all my savings and having nothing to show for myself except hassle.
And it's an instant-sollution. I think though, I'm really really really going to pull my finger out and look for other things.

It's the people, I think. Some are ace, but some really are losers, like, proper losers. Not just "Haha, oh man, YOU LOSER", more like "Oh man, =/".
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:19, Reply)
I love at least half of the drivers
and the customers are pretty cool, especially some of the regulars. But it's fucking rotten and jobs are being shifted off all over the place. Everyone who isn't bent hates working here and everyone who is rubs their hands together with glee. It really grates on me because I try to live an honest life and half the people in my job are sneaky dishonest cuntbags.

Anyway, do what you've gotta do to stay afloat I guess. But set yourself a time limit and don't lose that motivation for 'getting a proper job' you mentioned above.
(, Tue 12 Jan 2010, 12:31, Reply)
I reckon about 25% I think are losers, 25% are really nice decent people, and I'm indifferent to the other half.
Luckly, in our firm, there isn't much bent stuff going on. Everyone reckons everyone else is, they say the greek controllers feed the greeks, turkish to the turkish and english to whoever pays... but in the yearish I worked there, I never saw a single bribe.
