It seems appropriate that it should have been dreamt up by an American lot,
I'm sure of all the nations that frequent the internet, they seem to struggle most with the concepts of sarcasm and irony.
Edit: Have just read some of the comments. My, they are taking it badly...

This isn't the first time I've seen this topic on an online message board
But 888 subtitles is way ahead of you. I remember seeing years ago them using a bracketed exclamation mark as a signifier of sarcastic intonation e.g. I love how well informed Bonio and Bob Geldof are at how to help developing African nations(!)

Oh, great, so everyone has to update their fonts, fonts which will have to pay royalties to SarcMark Company, which in turn will bring the cost of every single piece of software up.
