It's not true of all artists,
sometimes the second album is actually better than their first. Personally I think Mirage is a more consistent effort than Camel's début, Emily Loizeau's Pays Sauvage was even better than L'Autre Bout Du Monde and Hooverphonic's Blue Wonder Power Milk is, I think, possibly their best.

The difficult one is Hawkwind. I still maintain the first two albums are the best, but is In Search of Space better than their wonderfully atmospheric début?

Oh, and just to open a can of worms: I prefer Radiohead from Ok Computer onwards.

I like Radiohead from O.K. Computer onwards
but The Bends and O.K. Computer were both the peaks of either side of their "style". Saying that In Rainbows is pretty close to reaching that height, but not quite.

Warrior on the Edge of Time is Hawkwind's best.
This may well be acid nostalgia informing my tastes, however.
