What's the story with never buying the second album?
As evidenced in this weeks QOTW re: Pearl Jam, The Strokes, Interpol etc
You could be forgiven for only ever buying the first Oasis album, mind and yet, half the world owns their entire catalogue.
Prees to esplain???
thanks

Being also "pro-album,"
I think it's partly because I'm old-fashioned, but also because if the artist has gone to the trouble of compiling the album as a complete work, along with a pretty picture on the sleeve, I'd prefer to go the trouble of listening to, and forming an opinion on, the album as they intended it.

it's because most bands are shit
and it's not worth buying their other albums. Pearl Jam's have done some great stuff (Binaural is amazingly good) and some that's not so good. Most of Yield for example.
Generally, if I really like a band I'll get everything they've done.

Because a lot of these flash-in-the-pan bands
e.g., The Strokes had/have a gimmicky sound that grabs people's attention for their first album. By the time they have to knock out a follow-up, it suddenly becomes apparent what a bunch of one-trick ponies they are when the second album sounds like a crap 'B'-side to the first one.
Didn't seem to stop Oasis, mind. Has their sound changed at all in the last fifteen/twenty years?

Is This It, to be fair, sounded different to everything around it at the time, and admittedly I didn't hear the whole of the second one but dismissed it when the singles from it sounded just the same as the middling tracks on the first one.

It's not true of all artists,
sometimes the second album is actually better than their first. Personally I think
Mirage is a more consistent effort than Camel's début, Emily Loizeau's
Pays Sauvage was even better than
L'Autre Bout Du Monde and Hooverphonic's
Blue Wonder Power Milk is, I think, possibly their best.
The difficult one is Hawkwind. I still maintain the first two albums are the best, but is
In Search of Space better than their wonderfully atmospheric début?
Oh, and just to open a can of worms: I prefer Radiohead from
Ok Computer onwards.

Often...
The first album is a (young) lifetime of experience, naive and shows a desire to be heard.
The second is usually done in six months and is about how difficult life on the road is, drug stories and why they want to incorporate the 'dance element' that was always under the surface or use a string quartet to 'add depth'. Also - the record company will be telling them how to 'shift units' and offering 'advice' on how to sound more commercial which will of course dilute the art and charm that made them popular on the first.
Not all bands of course, but quite a lot.
