Geeky help please. First time asking.
My sister needs a new powerpack for her monitor but has been quoted £30. I figure I can get it cheaper on the tinternet but need to make sure I get the right thing.

12 volt
4/5 amp
+ to tip
2.1mm dc jack (I can only find 2.5mm)

Anyone able to linky to correct item to purchase please?

Edit - Having looked again I think the price she's been quoted seems reasonable. If anyone knows of cheaper than please let me know.

Fanks!

You should stick to White goods love.
It will all end in tears and chocolate otherwise.

Sorry but a chocolate teapot would be more useful than me
in a situation like this. I'm a complete and utter useless and incompetant fuckwit when it comes to computers.

You'll be lucky
to find one as meaty as 4 or 5A as an aftermarket product. £30 is actually a pretty good price for that sort of power rating.

Thanks!
I'll let her know.

Are you sure about the 4/5 amp bit?
I assume that means 4 to 5 amps, really quite a lot for a monitor.

are you sure it is not mA?

You would not be able to push that much power down a tiny jack like that, so something is wrong.

That's what's written of the scrap of paper given to her by the electronics guy.
It's an old monitor if that's any help.
(, Fri 26 Feb 2010, 13:07, Reply)
Nah, it'll be right enough
12V at 5A is 60W - which is about what I'd expect the power draw to be, on an old monitor at least.

But not through such a small jack
It'll get quite warm.
(, Fri 26 Feb 2010, 13:12, Reply)
Maybe
that's why it failed in the first place! But the plugs can be bought with ratings of 5A or above, so it shouldn't really be a problem.

If you get a linky send it to me or post it here.
My wife is just clearing out her offices and we are throwing out loads of transformers, power packs, and shite.
And even a couple of screens, some small HP printers (880s/930s but going fine), scanners. All working but 2/3 years old - some not so old.
(, Fri 26 Feb 2010, 13:06, Reply)
Why replace it?
If you shop around you can get a new or refurbished 17" flat screen with a years warranty for less than £50 easily enough.
(, Fri 26 Feb 2010, 14:53, Reply)
That size ect sounds totally normal as the 2.1 refers to the inner not the outer.
It would be cheapest of all to buy a 2.1 jack and find a 12v 4-5a power supply and they are everywhere. In fact I could probably send you one if I look around enough.
