I am not an internet geek...
At least, not the good type who actually has technical knowledge of how to do useful things on the web.

I'm looking to create a website. Nothing fancy, just needs to show off photos and information, maybe have some YouTube videos embedded. It also needs to look relatively professional.

I am willing to spend money on this venture (but not much). The question is, how easy/difficult is it to make one? Do you know any Web Hosts which are awful/decent? Can I learn everything I need on the internet for free or will I need an alpha-geek's special powers?

Difficult to do well;
Much of a muchness;
You can do it yourself but it won't look professional

If you want a professional look get a professional to do it
and look at their work because some professionals are rubbish.

Hmm
This is much as I suspected. My first thoughts upon browsing online were

"if this were easy/cheap everyone would do it and all websites would look wonderful"

I suppose when it comes down to I'm asking how much time, money and effort I'll need to expend to make a site look closer to

this: www.apple.com/

than this: msy.com.au/

(N.B. I'm fully aware it won't look as good as a multi-national technology corporation's)

Or this
banlieusard.info/worst/index2.html

Though I suspect it's a joke - NSFE (Not Suitable For Epileptics)

I'm actually just having a good time browsing brutally ugly websites now.

your poor version
is seriously butt-ugly

I teach web design and Internet applications at university level.
For £750 a day I will give you an in-depth account of accessibility, usability and user experience. I will teach you about XHTML and CSS and scripting and multimedia. I still can't guarantee you'll produce anything that looks vaguely good though.

DEAL!
Though I don't think much of your typing skills. You accidentally wrote £750 there when you meant £0.75.
(, Thu 18 Mar 2010, 14:51, Reply)
Hmmm. I don't think much of your proofreading skills.
Always be sure to verify your website content.

Hmm....
I'll let that one slide, though I'll hev uyo know my profreasing skills are secon to none.

What really confuses me, however, is that not only are you female, you're also claiming to know about technology. I am left puzzled and limp.

I'm writing an essay on feminism in the workplace just now. I'm scared it's making me into a feminist sympathiser (and by extension, a cocoa-shunter) though, so I have to assert some thoughtless sexism now and again.

No me neither, I'd love to get paid £1150/day
Something always tells me I'm not worth it....
