my housemate made that mistake, she said no and he had to spend another week with her where all she wanted to do was talk about it.

it's an interesting point
I'm certain she won't say no, given that our enormous joint mortgage is more of a commitment, but timing is worth considering.
I was thinking I'd do it near the beginning, then I could reap the benefits for the rest of the holiday.

turns out that this is not the way girls look at things. Do it early in the holiday, almost everyone I know taht has got engaged has argued with their girlfriend before hand as they as uptight and twitchy so just do it and reap the rewards!
