w00t!
This has been a good week for my daughter. On Wednesday night she got inducted into the National Honors Society, and last night she was in the state-level high school photo and won first place in the state of Virginia. This means that this summer she goes on to compete at the national level!

I think she wore her medal to bed. She was so jazzed up that she was awake until at least 2 am.

So what good news have you to share on a Sunday?

So she's won a photo competition?
Sounds good, what did she photograph?
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 15:31, Reply)
She had four photos that she entered.
One was of a piece of playground equipment that she had shot in B&W, then colorized one of the climbing rings. The second was a portrait of one of her classmates. The third was part of an assignment where she shot a friend wearing a Halloween mask, bunny ears and silly clothes that came out rather disturbing. The fourth was an extreme closeup that resembled a lot of very strange weeds, that turned out to be a cleaning brush from the chemistry lab.

While at the competition they were instructed to take some photos, then use Photoshop to manipulate them in very specific ways. I have yet to see her photo, but she described one by one of her competitors that she felt should have won- superimposing faces onto rose blooms, with interesting color manipulations.

She was figuring that she would have come in as second at best, more likely as third. Instead at about 9:30 last night she sent me a text message on my phone that said "FIRST PLACE MUTHA FUCKA!"

I think she flew home, she was so happy...

EDIT: when she wakes up I may ask her for copies of the pics to upload.

That would be good, I like seeing really good photography.

I hear the shower running upstairs
so I should be able to get her to give me copies shortly. I've been encouraging her to post them on /board, but she hasn't done so yet. I may do so on her behalf...
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 16:47, Reply)
Posted on /board now.
She just had the ones from her Photoshop session on site handy, but I'll get the others from her tomorrow.

Go have a look at some of mine.
They're brilliant.

By brilliant I mean average.

By average I mean my Mum likes them. And she's blind.

So Rood! But I'll take your word for it
as you didn't post a linky I'll not bother meself.

Sorry to hear about your Ma - at what stage of your developement did she claw her eyes out?
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 18:04, Reply)
Here ya go.
Clicky.

I'll be posting her portfolio stuff when she brings it to me.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 18:08, Reply)
Clever stuff. Shows promise. Yellow rosette.
But I doubt B3ta indifference will dim your pride.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 18:13, Reply)
Nah. It would be hard to dim that.
As I said, she also got into the National Honors Society, which means that she's doing exceptionally well as a student. That kinda outshines the photography award in a way.

Besides, I've seen the hard copies of what she did for her portfolio and they're much more interesting. When she gets me electronic copies I'll post those too.

I have managed to repair my Gaggia espresso maker!
So now I'm buzzing like a faulty vibrator!

You should make your friend some coffee
Coffee always makes victims of domestic violence feel better.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 15:33, Reply)
She's more of a black tea with lemon kind of a gal.
And I'm really not sure if you're taking the piss or not.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 15:37, Reply)
I'd go with yes.

(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:14, Reply)
when in doubt
just assume sarcasm
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:26, Reply)
No doubt about it.
It's Al.

Ok but uneventful.
How about you?
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:57, Reply)
spent the morning in A&E
my room-mate had buggered her foot up. Apart from that just quite quiet thanks
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:58, Reply)
Urgh! sorry to hear that.
Alcohol induced injury?
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:01, Reply)
oddly enough yes
we had a party and there was wrestling and she hurt her ankle doing that. Two days ago though. Last night was a good night. Vodka, pizza and Supernatural. Got anything nice planned?

Not until June.
My mums away for a few months so all my weekends are taken up sorting out the family.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:11, Reply)
going on holiday in June then?

(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:13, Reply)
No, big B3ta bash at my house.
Holiday in August in Kos.

*excites*
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:15, Reply)
Really - and just when can I expect my invite?

(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:18, Reply)
You don't get invites.
You check out the B3ta calender and put your name down.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:18, Reply)
ooh Kos
that'll be nice :) I was thinking about going to a b3ta bash in London, but then realised that I don't really know any of the others especially well, so not sure now
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:20, Reply)
Well I can't speak for the other boards but if it's an off-topic bash then go for it.
Just make sure you're prepared for some boob action : )

oops
www.b3ta.com/calendar/event/19766
that one. I know a b3tan from Oxford who might be going in which case it could be a really fun night.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:27, Reply)
Well there's a couple of B3tans on that list I know.
I've met Lampito and Rotating Wobbly Hat who are ace. I'm sure you'll be fine. Go for it.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:30, Reply)
I may do so
I am very tired of Oxford already. Need to escape
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:32, Reply)

We've all done it
Just sign up to an evening of people you've never met. You'll know a lot about people as soon as they say their username, so don't let "I don't know them" stop you attending...

*Runs off to check calendar*
*Runs back to kitchen to remove naan from grill*

Well I have.
Must have been 200 plus Cubs, Beavers and Scouts at our St George's day parade and they were all enjoying themselves. Even in church.
Now I'm cooking a korma for my two kids and it smells delish. Time to open a Badgers.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:57, Reply)
ohhh so that's what that was
there were loads of Scouts and stuff in the street outside my college today. That explains it
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 19:59, Reply)
Ha - pretend to be apathetic about St George's day if you want.
I don't care.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:02, Reply)
I don't get it.
Why everyone's sudden interest in St George's day.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:04, Reply)
Possibly because Paddy's Day is a real earner, so why not ?
Tad cynical? - not really. The pub next to the church was heaving with parents "waiting" for their Scouts. The pub had generously allowed us to muster there. When the Scouts all went home, three dozen leaders took over the pub garden to reward themselves.
(, Sun 25 Apr 2010, 20:08, Reply)
I wasn't being cynical
I just didn't connect the two things :)
