Woo, Scotland!
If he doesn't feed you something deep fried every day you're here, ditch him.

Haha I'm not seeing him there.
He's near Aviemore, and we may be going to that bit near the Solway Firth.
It's Scotland for beginners.

The Solway Firth
is about 200 miles from Aviemore!

He's going to Edinburgh at some point over that day anyway
I don't know where things are in Scotland.

Well, Aviemore's getting fairly far north, up the A9, towards Inverness.
The Solway Firth is the river on the bottom left, separating Scotland from the NW of England. And Edinburgh is half way down on the right hand side.

I've looked up the Solway Firth
and I gathered it would be near Cumbria, but the rest is still a bit of a mystery. I've always been a Wales person when I've needed hills and that.

Scotland's got a hilly bit in the south (the Southern Uplands)
a flattish bit in the middle (the Central Lowlands) and mountains in the north (the Highlands).

Because my friend said it'll be a pleasant drive if the weather's nice
I'll go with the flow because there's always food and booze at the end of these things.

Fair reasons all round
You could still have chosen a better weekend though. Like the one when I'm home.

So this chap starts a new job, and the owner gives him a broom and says
"Just sweep out the storeroom".
"Do what?" says the chappie,"I'm a graduate".
"OK" says the owner,"give me the broom then, and I'll show you how."

That's often how it is where I work.
Not when I was a graduate trainee though. I was brilliant.

Scottish Geography 1.01
1.02 deals with cities. Edinburgh is in the middle on the right. Glasgow is on the middle on the left. Aberdeen is on the sticky out bit higher up on the right. Dundee's down a bit from Aberdeen. Stirling's right in the middle. And Inverness is up near the top.
Sorry if that's too much for one lesson.
