Let's share the good things!
I’ve been part of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) for a while, but I wasn’t an active member for different reasons until quite recently.

EWB works with other NGOs to carry out engineering projects in developing countries, from making houses and schools from something better than hay, to install pumps to bring water to communities and explain them the proper ways of getting that water clean before drinking it; from doing research in order to get seeds that are more resistant to draught to helping with the use of new technologies or machinery.

If you are an Engineering student or new graduate, you could help by going on a placement and putting one of those projects in to practice; which would be as good for them as for you, because you’ll get work experience in an exotic a new place.

If you graduated more than 5 years ago, or if you have nothing to do with Engineering, you can help from your own home, as little as a couple of hours per week. We need people to manage projects; help students with technical problems and support them; evaluate the cost/benefits of the projects; spread the word in schools, universities or work places… There are many things you could do.

We don’t ask you for any money. Joining is for free, as well as most of our events. Some training courses need paying a small fee, as not all the speakers go for free, and there are rooms and food to pay for, but that’s about as much as it’ll be.

I won’t bother you anymore, and I won’t write another post like this, as I know it’s annoying to keep being invited to things you don’t care about or you don’t have the time to do. Just this once, and sorry if I bothered you.

If you want to know more about it, gaz me and I’ll tell you what you can do.

Sorry porkylips for posting so soon after you! I'm a bit busy today.

as an engineer primarily involved in water related stuff this would be just up my street
however, I'm busy stopping this country flooding, and I can't afford to do work that doesn't pay :-/

I'm busy too, and work 40h/week
You only need to put a couple on this.

while the following will be excuses to justify my laziness they are still valid
I've got a house to decorate, a wedding to plan, and a band to practice and gig with.

I don't have enough time for surfing as it is.

Much as I'd like to help people, I'm horribly selfish and need to put my own stuff first.

You are good with numbers, aren't you?
And you'd get to meet sexy young engineers :)
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:47, Reply)
No I'm crap with numbers.
I have a calculator and a bookeeper who comes in once a month.
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:52, Reply)
there is no such thing as a sexy young engineer
most engineers are some of the most boring people you could meet. for a great deal of them an engineer is what they are, not what they do. I find the idea abhorrent.
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:53, Reply)
Most of my friends are engineers
And we are all fun!
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 14:24, Reply)
I've probably been biased by civil and structural engineers
who are generally awful
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 14:32, Reply)
Electrical engineers are fun and sexy.
Mentioning no names.

I'm glad I'm not resistant to draught
bottles are expensive.
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:26, Reply)
why do you need bottles
when you have air coming under your door/through the cracks in your windows?
(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:35, Reply)
Oh wow, and there was me thinking EWB stood for Ecstatic Willy Botherers

(, Thu 13 May 2010, 13:31, Reply)

Where do I join?

Guys at our uni
Just finished a team project in association with EWB, and I was actually thinking about looking at it. Not much else doing today, so why not.

I'll write to you later and explain
When I have some time.
