From recent experience
Apples, pears and bananas are all great bases, don't affect the flavour too much and are good sweeteners
Melon, mango, pineapple, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries etc are all brilliant in whatever combinations and proportions
Plain yoghurt binds smoothies quite well but generally contain fat and can make them sour. Good ripe fruit doesn't need any sugar or honey. If you've made a batch and it's too sour, add honey a spoon at a time, blending in between, and check for taste
Oats and museli are great in smoothies
Finally, don't peel anything you'd usually eat the skin of. Much of a fruit's goodness is in the skin and smoothies don't really have to be smooth

And, buy one of those apple corers, they're a fucking lifesaver. And make sure your knives are sharp.

I use frozen apple, mandarin, melon and grapes with orange, apple or pomegranate juice.

quick and delicious with the added bonus that you don't have to remember to buy yoghurt

Frozen berry and fruit packs from supermarkets are genius.

they really are
I use the sainsburys basic fruit cocktail one because it is merely £1 and I can get almost a week's worth of smoothies out of it
