Favourite coming-of-age movie?
I don't want to bias anyone so I'm not saying mine just yet.

Alt Q: Favourite movie starring Emilio Estevez and/or Molly Ringwald?

Almost famous

this one has my vote as well
although Stand By Me comes close, as does Big Wednesday after being reminded of it.
(, Thu 8 Jul 2010, 9:00, Reply)
Gummo or Stand By Me

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:14, Reply)
gummo
I watched the trailer and read the wikipedia entry and decided you're a strange fucker.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:58, Reply)
Ha.
After reading the Wiki description, I can understand your opinion. However, it's a great film with a good raggedy documentary feel to it. Recommended if only for the Redneck vs Chair scene.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:33, Reply)
Big Wednesday.
i think that counts.
or possibly Rumblefish.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:16, Reply)
big wednesday - good call
as for the alt Q, of Ringwald's filmography: www.imdb.com/name/nm0000208/
i've only seen her in pretty in pink and breakfast club, and my favourite of the two is the latter, but only for Judd Hirsh

as for estevez, repo man, no question
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:40, Reply)
Pfft Nelson

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:43, Reply)
ah, hirsh is the lad in Taxi
i always get them mixed up because no-one else in the world is called Judd (not even Judd apatow)
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:47, Reply)
PJM just said, 'Lesley Judd'
Is this some strange sort of deviant sexual practice?
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:54, Reply)
i prefered Janet Ellis

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:10, Reply)
I couldn't decide if I liked Mick Robertson or not
/ITV

Bizarrely
I watched The Breakfast Club for the first time on Sunday. It was so gloriously 80's and I was enjoying it very much until I realised that essentially bugger all happens. I still need to watch Pretty in Pink though, not least because it has a young James Spader who will be delicious and nom.

Coming of age movie, hmm...I can't really think of any. I don't suppose Labyrinth counts?
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:20, Reply)
For the alt. q Young Guns 2, obviously
Emilio's brother's on E4 right now; I haven't seen Hotshots in almost 20 years, and it's the funniest thing I've seen in almost 20 years
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:30, Reply)
As a nerdy geek nerdgeek
I of course choose Weird Science.

But some good choices there. I'm not sure why Breakfast Club isn't being counted as a coming-of-age movie...

Pretty Peaches
Why i just remembered that i have no idea.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:38, Reply)
The Lost Boys
Don't like these modern pretty vampires but the music and all round general creepiness of Jack Bauer as a teenager with fangs works for me.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 22:56, Reply)
You put a thing in my penis in a dream I had last night

(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:00, Reply)
Was it a hammer?
Or perhaps I hit it with a big stick? ;)
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:02, Reply)
Even I would have difficulty finding room for a hammer in my japs eye
It was a little plastic thing, like a cocktail stirrer, it was a medical examination
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:06, Reply)
That sounds extremely painful
I approve.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:10, Reply)
It was ok, you only used the tip
Do you really want to hurt me?
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:12, Reply)
Do you really want to make me cry?

Performance.

I wasn't aware that the Happy Monday's track 'Mad Cyril',
which is one of their few decent tracks, sampled this heavily.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:38, Reply)
I love it so very much.
Seeing Chas's plaintive cry of 'You've poisoned me!' when he realises he's eaten some advanced-level mushrooms was a coming of age moment for me.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:45, Reply)
The whole thing is very druggy.
It certainly took me a few watches to understand what was going on.
(, Wed 7 Jul 2010, 23:48, Reply)
It's fucked-up, dark and weird.
Like a film version of Kris Akabusi, you might say.
(, Thu 8 Jul 2010, 0:17, Reply)
Weird Science
You would wouldn't you?
(, Thu 8 Jul 2010, 0:15, Reply)
