But what if the parents are a bad influance, as such is many cases?
I'm not saying they're bad people, just bad influances, normally I presume lacking in 'life experiance', 'commons sense' or 'general education' themselves? They'll pass that onto their children, except as always the way, it'll get worst and worst until it reaches a curchendo* and a generation would rebell into a decent way of life, or will end up being locked away for life before being able to breed.

yes parents are a massive influence on children, but that doesn't mean that some of that influence can't be fixed or modified. From the age of five onwards, you spend as much time at school as with your family when you factor in sleep/ bus journey etc

Maybe our whole system of having families at all is a mistake in this day and age?

Yeh', I agree, can't really change families, at least, you could but it would take loads of generations.
It's a sad fact, that for a lot of these families, the only way to get them to want to 'improve' themselves, is financial incentive... carrot or stick though? I donno.

that may be true but we can only police what goes on in peoples homes in a very limited way.
We have an educations system, I think it should be chaged a lot, not just in terms of funding but actual direction, especially pre GCSE age. If that happens then we can limit the bad influence of the parents and hopefully break the cycle.

I see what you mean, but I'm not sure I like the connaughtations....
... that we would no longer be trusting families to instill 'better' values on the youth, but I guess it _is_ a sign of the times. But can a teacher's word _ever_ be strong than a parents, in the eyes of the child?
