Thing you gotta ask yourself is, do you want to really assosiate with the kind of people who's lives are so dull and miserable that they need to spend all day in a pub by themselves.
Instead, join a local 'walking' group, where they tour old buildings with bricks that have carved in them "This house was owned by Thomas Lipton in 1857" and "This brick was layed by Her Magisty, The Dukehairest of Yorkshire"... or a local collage course.

I am almost tempted to join the 'crafters club'
which was in a local newsletter I got through my door. Not sure how they feel about crocheted eyeballs, though
