harder than you'd think
though one thing I have discovered, is if you don't eat full meals, it is amazingly difficult to actually eat 2000 calories a day
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:20, 3 replies, latest was 16 years ago)
not drinking loads of booze is the easiest way
eat as many vegetables as you like, eat less meat, don't eat anything processed, don't eat stuff that's chock full of fat or sugar.

not that hard.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:22, Reply)
I'm not a massive drinker
At most I drink once or twice a week.
Of course this will be at odds with people who've seen me at bashes where I inevitably get off my face.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:24, Reply)
even those few drinks have an effect
unless you counter it by eating lower calorie stuff on the days surrounding it.

I found it hard to lose any weight (not that I tried) before leaving uni. Wasn't till afterwards I joined the gym for a few months, then stopped that I started losing weight. I probably only have a few beers a week now, but can pretty much eat whatever and still slowly but surely am losing weight. I'm probably 3 stone lighter than at the end of uni.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:26, Reply)
I'd get into exercise, but I'm very listless at the moment.
And I don't exactly feel comfortable with jogging/walking in the area I'm in now :/
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:28, Reply)
I'm not built for running/jogging and find it incredibly boring
you've got find something that suits you. Needs to be convenient, not painful, and interesting enough to do it at least a couple of times a week, if not more.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:29, Reply)
I'm not a natural runner
So I try and mix it up a little. I do a lot of cycling, swimming and chop and change routines at the gym.

Swimming is excellent, it's brilliant for your cardio fitness and doesn't knacker your joints.

I can recommend surfing as well. Never done anything that works out so much of your body all at once.

Plus, it is fucking awesome fun.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:32, Reply)
That's why I chose cycling
(although I've not done it in a few weeks...) because it wasn't hard on my knees.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:32, Reply)
I want to go and swim in the lido at the Serpentine.
When/if the weather picks up...
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:35, Reply)
...It's August
It's only ever going to get chillier.

You're best served at the local pool where there's lanes and you can set yourself targets - ie six lengths in one session, six lengths without stopping etc.

Swimming burns calories like very little else provided you're using the right technique.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:38, Reply)
I'm well-insulated :D
I'll find out where it is, but seeing as I'm in Saaaf London it'll be nasty as fuck.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:39, Reply)
or trampolining
a friend of mine lost three stone over five months when he took it up regularly
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:40, Reply)
Our fucking garden's on a fucking slope :(
otherwise we'd have one.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:41, Reply)
Don't you own a bike?
Brilliant way to get fit.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:42, Reply)
I need to sort my mrs out with a bike so we can ride together
as it is I only ever ride to work, which is 10-15 minutes as fast as I can up and down steep hills, which puts me off doing it.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:45, Reply)
I'm the girl that never learned to ride one.

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:51, Reply)
I can't ride one anymore :(

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:57, Reply)
my ex couldn't
but I suspect that was because of her short little legs
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 16:03, Reply)
haha
that's quite funny. It's because I can't feel my feet, which could be quite dangerous
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 16:07, Reply)
we have a big one in our garden at home
but a massive one at uni. It might be worth checking out early morning sessions at your local sports centre. If you do go, remember to wear the strongest bra you can find
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:43, Reply)
I've started eating more healthily
Nowhere near as much processed food or take out, cutting down on booze, and snacking on fruit and carrots whenever I'm peckish. No change yet, but it's early days.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:28, Reply)
^ all good advice this
but doesn't necessarily work.

I was complaining a bit ago that 5 weeks of below a thousand calories a day teamed with a lot of exercise took nothing off me. Whereas a week with a lot of alcohol, but no food has definitely knocked some pounds off
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:25, Reply)
Exercise is like making small deposits in a bank
It takes time to build up momentum and kick start your metabolism.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:27, Reply)
^this

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:28, Reply)
I stopped running for a few months
Thanks to spazzy feet and I piled the pounds on.

It's taken nine months to get to a point where I was this time three years ago.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:30, Reply)
it's some weird metabolism thing I think
it takes quite a while of doing a load of exercise to kick start the weight loss process I think. You can slacken off afterwards and watch what you eat together with semi-regular exercise.

That is my experience and that of Mrs V anyway.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:28, Reply)
I hope this is true for me
but I'm definitely losing weight now.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:30, Reply)
it's all about balance
if you are going out on a bender, only eat vegetables for the few days leading up to it. Eat as many as you want until they are coming out of every orifice, so you don't need to not fill yourself up, but you need to counter the empty calories in the booze.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:32, Reply)
makes total sense
I reckon my calories come not from the booze so much, as from the food I inevitably stuff into my face afterwards
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:36, Reply)
that's the trouble, and most people do it
you've eaten before going out, then you drink a load of booze so already way more calories than you should have had, and then finish it off with something sweet or fatty and greasy afterwards.

those dirty burgers and kebabs taste so good though
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:41, Reply)
chips, onion rings and garlic mayo
I hate myself in the morning, but it is worth it.

Well I've got two months to make a difference, and this food-shortage could actually be a good thing if it kickstarts me into losing weight
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:44, Reply)
drastically reducing the amount you are eating may not work too well
it's better to up the exercise at first and reduce intake a bit.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:46, Reply)
In Ireland the only exercise is walking
which I can't stand. I do a bit of mock-aerobics (jumping around to a playlist entitled 'shit playlist'.)

I have no choice on the foodintake sadly. Unless I start cooking
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:50, Reply)
that sounds unfortunate
you should take up hurling (the sport, I'm not advocating bulimia)
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 16:03, Reply)
from all accounts
bulimia doesn't even work.

And I played hurling as a child
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 16:07, Reply)
I agree with the Amberl^ and Vipros
Trying to lose weight will depress you, make you more tired, and in turn cause you to eat more fatty foods and do less exercise.
I'd suggest trying to be happy with yourself teh way you are, sort out any other problems you may be having, and you'll find that you'll naturally eat a fairly balanced healthy diet, as well as jsut doing more.

Problem solved. Next please.

^What Bert said
There's a lot of sense in this.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:28, Reply)
I'm so gonna punch you in the tits
like RIGHT in in the tits
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:29, Reply)
With your Salmon?

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:30, Reply)
salmon can't punch
I'll be forcing that down your throat like a bullimic petrel, as I repeatedly punch your manmaries
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:31, Reply)
Is that your special move (tm)?

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:32, Reply)
yeah
Brian Blessed will be on the sidelines bellowing 'FINISH HIM', and then you'll be proper fucked
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:34, Reply)
I was greatly amused at the "Bullimic Petrel" bit

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:36, Reply)
glad to hear it
you may have noticed I've done a few sea bird jokes recently, it's because they're all names of ships I've organised wortk on
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:38, Reply)
Anhedonia should make healthy eating easier
All food tastes shit when all food tastes shit.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:24, Reply)
I just googled that
saw the meaning on Wikipedia and thought to myself 'that sounds like what I have'

but then I thought,'except it's clearly a made-up illness'
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:27, Reply)
If you want another one of those, google hypersomnia.

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:29, Reply)
that's another made-up illness for lazy people
but at the other end of the scale, I'm coming up for about 4 years worth insomnia.

Hooray!
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:30, Reply)
That's what I said
It was mainly through lack of routine and poor sleeping pattern. Though up to 14 hours a day of uninterrupted sleep was not natural.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:34, Reply)
marry me
and I'll make it all better

15 years now

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:34, Reply)
that sucks
any idea of what causes yours? I know what mine is, it's the same, repeated thought bouncing around in my head, driving mental. I'm unable to turn it off in any way, it just haunts me
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:36, Reply)
started when I was six
and never went away. Very active mind at night I think
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:41, Reply)
you is a slag?

(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:42, Reply)
same here
no particular thoughts, but my mind jumps from one thing to another really fast.

makes me more aware of light and sound as well.
(, Fri 6 Aug 2010, 15:42, Reply)
true
I think too much, and I hate just lying there so I get up and do things. It used to help with creative writing a hell of a lot though
