I've never met her, I only knew of her, but it came with the donation to her memorial thing, which seemed a nice thing to donate to. I don't know a dead soldier either, but I still wear a poppy.

It's a good source of information for us at work & a way of promoting ourselves, driving traffic to our sites etc
There is an unwritten etiquette to Twitter which takes time to grasp - if you promote yourself or your business too aggressively people get pissed off. It's about building relationships with other people in your industry, sharing & seeking knowledge etc to build a reputation.
