But if you're actually interested, going out for a drink with just them, and saying about how you've been getting close to so-and-so, and is it alright with her if you give it a go?

I tried this once and still have the scar to show for it
A friend of mine had broken up with his ex about six weeks before and one night she showed some interest in me, I put the brakes on anything temporarily and went and had a drink with him to see if he'd have a problem with it. Saying he didn't I went ahead and orgainsed a date for that weekend. On the Friday night after a few drinks the guy changed his mind and decided that the appropriate course of action would be to smack me round the back of the head with a lump of 2x4. Not his finest hour but he did end up takeing me to A&E afterwards and she turned out to be madder than a box of frogs so it all worked out OK in the end.
