I think they use a sumulator to practise at times as the rules limit how much time they can spend practising in a real car.

But I see it like this, they're told they might race in some place they've never been, he's at home, it's a sunday and dinner will be ready in a few hours...
... so rather than get dressed and go into the simulator set up in the spare room, they bung a disk into the playstation and give it a little go so they can see rougly what it's like.

I am sure this has happened at some point.
There was an episode of Top Gear a few years ago where Clarkson drove a Honda NSX around a track on a playstation then went and did the same IRL (same car & track). He couldn't beat his playstation laptime

I got to drive around Silverstone a few years ago on my own in a supercharged Jag. 4 laps was not enough

Another two have gone out now, I think they're from the same team. One car went flying.
There is a bloke holding the nose of a car, it's amazing how they can put it together and take it appart, pretty much anything on the car, inside the time it takes me to open the lid of some pickles before the seal is broken.

Ahh, cool
The only trouble with this sport, from a spectator's point of view, it's one of the only sports in the world that I can think of where you can't see the entire playing field at the same time, and in fact, at any one point, can only see a small percentage of the whole thing.

There are probably more cameras in F1 than they are in any other sport.

i went to silverstone once
wasn't F1, but it was still pretty fast and as such CRAP. It was noisy and stinky and you saw the cars for a fraction of a second every so often. Much better on telly

Cool, that's what I reckon too, unless you're in a car, the view will be shit.
