Dude
Call your landlord tomorrow. It's getting cold out there. Do you have access to the boiler/thermostat? Check them. Maybe ask a neighbour/housemate?

You mentioned this the other day and it seemed super weird to me.

That's all assuming you live in rented student accommodation
If it's your own house/flat then no heating is doubly weird.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:39, Reply)
We're renting a house
We found a thermostat, turned it on, but nothing's happened. Had a fiddle around with the radiators, shit all's happened. Give it a few more days until we start to ice over.

Step 1 turn the boiler on
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:44, Reply)
^this could well be the answer
although I assume it's on already and you don't shower with cold water???

Check the entire place for buttons and switches to do with the heating. there's got to be a way.

Boiler's on!
I'm pretty sure. I'm sure it's probably me not being able to turn on radiators or something.

Step 2 rads and hot water should be on separate controls. Flick to on or constant.
Edit some thermostats aren't wired up properly / or have anything to do with the boiler.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:49, Reply)
We've got a couple of controls in the hall that look like radiatory things.
A temperature control and just a gold box. The radiators don't have temperature controls, just wheels. I'll have a play around.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:51, Reply)
Ensure thermostat is beyond 15 degrees you know the 'click'
The gold box I guess will be your controls for hot water / rads - just ensure everything is on constant. I assume your boiler has fired, so ensure all controls are set to constant on that as well.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:57, Reply)
The boiler's fine
I've fiddled around with the temperature- as soon as I know it's on I'll adjust it.

It's not going to blow up, is it?!
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:00, Reply)
Unlikely, your only concern now should be carbon monoxide poisoning.
Request to see the latest yearly corgi. Dodgy landlords will save themselves £150 and not bother
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:06, Reply)
We have a detector in the same room as the boiler
My flatmate's best friend's flatmate (tenuous but close enough) went home in the uni holiday and died of CO poisoning at home.. So my flatmate's a little nervous.

The boiler was serviced before we moved in, we've been assured.

Meh, you might wanna see a copy if he's a dodgy looking fucker
Expect to receive confirmation of deposit protection, if you don't get it moan to the landlord for a copy.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:16, Reply)
He seems incredibly nice
Thanks for your help, I'll follow it up.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:19, Reply)
the radiators could need bleeding
but even then you'd get some heat. deffo call the landlord. make out that the heating is fucked.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:50, Reply)
I'll look like a reet idiot not knowing how to work the fucking heating.

Step 3 a loss of pressure in the system is quite common, ensure you have 1 1/2 bar pressure, if not then allow water into the system
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:53, Reply)
There was a mystery switch in the hall inbetween the lightswitches.
I've clicked it and I think that's sorted it out. Thank you both for your concern over a cold fat girl.

I will bow to your superior knowledge
but from what married friends have let drop it seems I'm still right

Pffft.

(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:41, Reply)
Next try and find the boiler, there could be a master switch to turn it on
If no luck tonight get on the phone to your landlord asap tomorrow. Sounds like your heating is fucked.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:45, Reply)
Awww! you're really nice.
And Rory.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 20:57, Reply)
I have to deal with students and post grads all the time
As a golden rule they aint got a clue about real world stuff like boilers and such.
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:02, Reply)
I once fixed a boiler
granted there was nothing wrong with it, but the pride remains
(, Sun 26 Sep 2010, 21:05, Reply)
I'm impressed, most of the kids I deal with expect me to wipe their arse and everything, such is their cluelessness
I despair for the future of this country.
