It's not good if you expect to be able to install new software or use it as a multi use pc.

I cannot imagine that linux would be more use to me. The only trouble I have on my Vista computer at home is that my shitty usb wireless dongle very occasionally causes a BSOD.
I've used linux in the past, when I taught a class on SQL briefly, and it was just a pain to learn something completely unlike the systems I'd been using for years.

I hate it so much. I'm glad i've only got XP.

when XP does everything I want to perfectly well.
I know I'll have to at some point, but I'm not in a hurry.

It takes the good bits of XP, the few good bits of Vista, and adds some more good bits.

you just have to trawl through your computer to find the program you want to run.
I'm sure it becomes easy after a while, but I hate having to learn new operating systems.

so you just type into the search box for anything you need.
Or fix them to your start bar.

Right, can anyone lend me about 6-700 quid for that computer you recommended on /talk. I promise not to spend that money making up the shortfall in the amount of tax I anticipated having to pay and the amount of tax it turns out I actually have to pay.

I'm afraid that upgrading might cock up my computer though
need to get some way of backing up all my stuff first.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:56, Reply)
I thought you had to do a clean install?
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:57, Reply)
But not from XP. I think a clean install's the better choice though.

less likely to fuck up.
means I need to back stuff up more though, cos if you are reinstalling you may as well format.
edit: didn't take me long to find a mate who has Windows 7 for me

since you don't want Microsoft deciding to remotely render your computer unusable

unfortunately I don't have the money to spend on it.
many would think this counts as a reason not to get it.

I'd do it for you with my lovely bulk licence, but you know. Exeter.
By cheap, I mean I got a terabyte drive for a little over 40 quid the other week.
