i can see the point of open-source for big companies who don't want to spend oodles on kit and software
i just wondered if the os was in any way useful for anything that windows/mac wasn't good at

It's good if you want a PC to do one job quickly and be reliable.
It's not good if you expect to be able to install new software or use it as a multi use pc.

fair do's

seeing as I find Windows perfectly suitable for everything I do
I cannot imagine that linux would be more use to me. The only trouble I have on my Vista computer at home is that my shitty usb wireless dongle very occasionally causes a BSOD.

I've used linux in the past, when I taught a class on SQL briefly, and it was just a pain to learn something completely unlike the systems I'd been using for years.

Vista is beyond shit
I hate it so much. I'm glad i've only got XP.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:43, Reply)
7 is worth getting

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:44, Reply)
I just don't want to have to learn a whole new operating system
when XP does everything I want to perfectly well.

I know I'll have to at some point, but I'm not in a hurry.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:47, Reply)
You would find 7 quite good I think
It takes the good bits of XP, the few good bits of Vista, and adds some more good bits.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:48, Reply)
But it doesn't have the "all programs" thing on the start menu
you just have to trawl through your computer to find the program you want to run.

I'm sure it becomes easy after a while, but I hate having to learn new operating systems.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:50, Reply)
it indexs your programs
so you just type into the search box for anything you need.
Or fix them to your start bar.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:52, Reply)
Okay, okay I'll get fucking windows 7 then, you don't have to keep going on about it.
Right, can anyone lend me about 6-700 quid for that computer you recommended on /talk. I promise not to spend that money making up the shortfall in the amount of tax I anticipated having to pay and the amount of tax it turns out I actually have to pay.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:53, Reply)
Damn tax bastards

Is it talking about sport?

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:51, Reply)

it has pop-ups in funny places.

it looks bloody sexy though, all pink and sleek.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:00, Reply)
Menu that drops down from the top of the screen for your webcam and things?

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:02, Reply)
It has pop ups because of all the viruses shes downloaded while searching for hardocre midget porn

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:03, Reply)
I just took those as a given

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:04, Reply)
i didn't even realise that the eye thing WAS a webcam

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:08, Reply)
No, but I have
*records*
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:09, Reply)
I need to get hold of 7
I'm afraid that upgrading might cock up my computer though

need to get some way of backing up all my stuff first.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:56, Reply)
I didn't think you could upgrade to 7
I thought you had to do a clean install?
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:57, Reply)
You can upgrade from Vista I think
But not from XP. I think a clean install's the better choice though.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 16:59, Reply)
I would agree with that
less likely to fuck up.

means I need to back stuff up more though, cos if you are reinstalling you may as well format.

edit: didn't take me long to find a mate who has Windows 7 for me
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:01, Reply)
I think the operating system is teh one thing I wouldn't pirate
since you don't want Microsoft deciding to remotely render your computer unusable
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:08, Reply)
that is a thought
unfortunately I don't have the money to spend on it.

many would think this counts as a reason not to get it.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:10, Reply)
Nah, be cavalier about it. No saves, no reloads. Ironman.

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:01, Reply)

music and photos porn

obvious strikethrough is obvious.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:06, Reply)
why would I need to download and keep porn?

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:06, Reply)
it's worth keeping the good bits
until you get bored of them
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:07, Reply)
Well you're running XP or Vista or whatever
so you're probably also using a 56k modem.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:07, Reply)
far from it
I'm the only Virgin customer in the world* who gets fast internet

*alright, on my street
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:10, Reply)
Really, though
how much of this stuff do you have? You can get external drives pretty cheaply online now, if you look.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:12, Reply)
I can't afford anything at the moment :-(
have to keep myself entertained somehow!
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:13, Reply)
Got a nerdy mate?
I'd do it for you with my lovely bulk licence, but you know. Exeter.

By cheap, I mean I got a terabyte drive for a little over 40 quid the other week.
(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:15, Reply)
HAHA you're a virgin!

(, Thu 11 Nov 2010, 17:13, Reply)
