Telephone numbers
0207 is not an area code. The area code for London is 020. Thank you.

I'm glad I am not alone
This is my #1 pet peeve too.

I have to physically restrain myself from screaming out, every time I hear one of my colleagues give our office phone number as "0208 ......"

AAAAARRRRGGGH!

For fuck's sake, don't these people understand how area codes and local numbers work?

I wrote this:

I made a rather large .gif ages ago that read something like
IT'S 020 7XXX XXXX
NOT 0207 XXX XXXX

YOU FUCKING MONGTARD

...

It bugs the living shit out of me.

no
no no no no no

How come your area code is three digits and the rest of the country has more than three

Oh that's right, it's fekking london

At least have the decency to acknowledge that 0208 and 0208 cater for different areas.

read your post
0208 and 0208 are the same number. If you're going to be rude, at leat check your post first.

020 is a number that points to london, under there you have 7 as a prefix, as well as 8 and 3. areas with 5 digit codes, also have further leading numbers after that to differenciate regions.

To Ogwen
1. Northern Ireland has a three-digit area code (028). So does Wales (029), although only Cardiff currently uses the new-style numbers starting 02. Coventry, Portsmouth, Southampton also have three-digit area codes (which will eventually be shared with other locations).

2. "0207 and 0208" do not cater for different areas. When London numbers were changed, all existing 0171 numbers had a 7 added to the local number, but since then 020 7xxx xxxx numbers have been assigned to "Outer London" customers and vice versa.

The midlands (024) have a three digit one as well.

This really, really gets on my tits too, especially working in a call centre for a certain British Telecommunications provider - I give London numbers out as 020 7xxx xxxx and I've sometimes had people correct me. This is why I want a button on my turret to electrocute morons on the other end of the line (customers or colleagues, I'm not going to discriminate).
