This is a question Political Correctness Gone Mad

Freddy Woo writes: "I once worked on an animation to help highlight the issues homeless people face in winter. The client was happy with the work, then a note came back that the ethnic mix of the characters were wrong. These were cartoon characters. They weren't meant to be ethnically anything, but we were forced to make one of them brown, at the cost of about 10k to the charity. This is how your donations are spent. Wisely as you can see."

How has PC affected you? (Please add your own tales - not five-year-old news stories cut-and-pasted from other websites)

More of a question really
Peter Jackson is currently filming the remake of The Dambusters. Will they keep the name of Guy Gibson's dog?

A black labrador.

Called 'Nigger'.

Maybe they could switch it for a white dog (Samoyed or something) and call it 'Honky'. I would be deeply offended if they did.

Couple of factlets: 'nigger' is a corruption of the Spanish for 'black'. 'Honky' is a Jamaican term for a pig.

Spanish?
Latin niger, ffs. Spanish (and Portugese, Italian, French, Romanian) is a corruption of Latin, really...

They probably will being American PC twats
It'll be shit no matter what the name of the dog. I am fully expecting Lancaster Bombers to be replaced with B17's and Barnes Wallace being exchanged for George Washington

I always thought they called us Honky because that was the last sound they heard before we ran them over ROFLOLAMOS /old grandad joke

I've just read a Peter Jackson interview...
and he says he hasn't made his mind up about Guy Gibson's dog yet. He did say that he wanted to encapsulate the 'spirit' of 1943 instead of doing it in a '2007 documentary way', and acknowledges that people's attitudes were different then. He then said:

"It's a situation where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. If you go one way, people are going to say we've sold out to political correctness. If you go the other way then you're obviously going to be inadvertently offending people. So, it's a no-win scenario."

The problem, as I read - is that not only was the dog called 'Nigger', but the name was used as a code word for when they breached the bomb, and therefore is more integral to the authenticity of the plot.

Should be quite interesting to see which way he goes...

Amazing....
Peter Jackson is directing a film which features British bombers destroying dams in the Ruhr which resulted in substantial loss of civillian life and didn't alter the eventual course of the war to any significant degree...

And people here are debating about a black labrador dog called "Nigger"!

Yes, the word is extremely distasteful but you have to view it in the context of the times.

A film about the exploits of the Tuskagee Airmen for example (an American squadron of fighter pilots who were exclusively black and who fought with distinction protecting bomber crews during WW2) is allowed to feature the word "Nigger" as it conveys a sense of prejudice. Argueably, the producers of the film about the Tuskagee Airmen would have gotten away with using the word "Boy" in the same context.

My personal view is that I am more comfortable using the word "Cunt" than ever I am using "nigger" - even in this context. However, I still see no reason to call into debate its use in the Dambusters film. You'd have to be pretty fucking dumb to see its inclusion of anything other than a reminder of how times have changed... And we don't exactly send large, four engined aircraft to drop bombs on Germany anymore either.

As the Happy Mondays sang...
Well I might be a honky
But I'm hung like a donkey

How can this be more offensive...
...than Tarantino et al's use of the word in films that is actually used to denigrate black people? Is that ok because we assume easily offended people won't watch Pulp Fiction? Why is it necessary to think that everyone's so fucking stupid they can't work out when something is meant offensively or not? If someone is offended by a dog's name we should go out of our way to psychologically fuck them up for their own good...
