This is a question Devastating Put-Downs

Amorous Badger says: I once saw a former manager of mine being asked to 'sit down and let your mouth have a chance to speak' by his senior. What's the best heckle/putdown/riposte you've ever seen? (Hint: Recycled 'Your mum' jokes does not make an answer)

Out of the mouths...
One day at the park, during the period when my daughter was first learning to talk, she was at the top of a castle in the playpark, happily making random noises in a fairly loud voice. Bah! Ti! Boo! and so on. Just as a couple of guys jogged past in the full fluorescent lycra bodysuits, with all the expensive accessories and designer shades, she looked at them and shouted out "Gay!"

I was so proud.

Aww, homophobia is so cute when it's coming from toddlers!

Well, actually I interpreted it in the modern idiom, where "gay" means "naff" or "crap"
...though of course you can make a coherent argument that THAT's homophobic.

And they did look like massive tools, who deserved pointing and laughing...

Indeed.
I was torn between finding your story funny, or being outraged.

As we're on the internet, I feel obliged to urge you to drown your children, to prevent further offence.

How dare you appropriate the word for your own use!
It's a perfectly legitimate word meaning "homosexual".

What's homophobic about it?
It just sounds like early-developing gaydar.

To be fair, there's nothing offensive about toddler babble.
That said, go persuade a toddler to shout "nigger" at some black people, and see how far that gets you.

The late and great comedian Dave Allen
When he was a small boy Went to his uncle's farm and while he was watching his uncle milking a cow it 'broke wind'. Little Dave asked "What was that? " His uncle replied "Oh the cow, it just farted". A few days later Dave and his dad ( A devoutly religious man who apparently hated bad language of any kind ) were walking their dog in the park and the dog 'let one go'. Dave said "Oh Daddy, doggie FARTED!" Dave's dad went ballistic on hearing his little boy uttering a 'naughty' word and yelled at him "Where did you hear that?" Young Dave replied "It came out of the dogs bum!"

in response to monster munch i dont think this is homophobic at all. There are two very different gay guys at our office.
One is very effeminate and the other is just a average sort of bloke you would never in fact guess was gay unless he told you.
When talking about the effeminate gay one day the average gay guy said "jesus thats the gayest gay man i know.... and i know lots of them."

The word Gay seems to have so many meanings these days i dont think anyone has a clue which definition is right anymore anyway.
People are also too scared to say what they mean because of this fact too.

i'll risk going further
*grabs fire blanket

I can't stand camp nancy-boy squealing queens.

It's not really anything to do with their sexuality, they're just tossers. I don't like straight tossers either. In fact now I think of it, I probably get on better with my 'normal' gay friends than my straight ones due to their conversation ranging further than football or starwars.

I agree.
"Professional homosexuals" - people who wouldn't know what music to listen to, what books to read, what to talk about or how to act, were it not for the fact that they're gay.

Bloody annoying.

See also "celebrity homosexuals"
AKA those who are famous and have a TV career by sole dint of the fact that they're gay. Apparently being gay now constitutes a talent in itself, and those who have become celebrities by latching onto this particular teat are not doing the cause any favour, since they're basically parading themselves like zoo animals.

Congratulations on hitting the wrong reply button.
I grew up with "gay" being used as a pejorative term, used to accuse someone of being homosexual. I'm all for words being reclaimed, by I'm less happy about them slipping into casual usage whilst retaining their negative conotations.

With a bit of luck, "gay" will drop out of fashion, much like "dutch" has long since done so.
