I'm broke, you're broke, we're all broke. Even the smug guy on the balcony with the croissant hasn't got two AmEx gold cards to rub together these days. Tell everybody your schemes to save cash.

They're not actually as cheap as they'd like you to think, and you always end up coming out with bags full of stuff you don't really need instead of the one or two things you went in there for.

assuming you can afford the £½million+ to buy a house in a village filled with thriving, local shops.

Well blow me. They must have all closed quick, I was in one only the other day.

and their numbers have dwindled. Both the town where I live and the town where I work have lost theirs, but the posh village down the road still has theirs (unsurprisingly).
Not everyone lives in a city.

The London Metropolitan Area alone is home to almost a fifth of the UK's population.

and that has only one butcher and I'm not driving a 40 mile rounds trip to get some pork chops when they are cheaper at aldi.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:15, closed)

well I'm sorry I spoke if what I said doesn't apply to absolutely everybody.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:17, closed)

or anywhere, or Liverpool or Rome cos Rotterdam is anywhere anywhere alone.

Very few people live 40 miles from their nearest butcher.
If you don't believe me, look it up. Or here, let me do it for you:
www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2009/aug/18/percentage-population-living-cities
UK urban population: 90.1%

but it's not just about meat. Plenty of things are cheaper elsewhere, not just veg but also seafood.

You're probably better off sticking to your list at tesco. I don't know about the whole country but round here veg is cheap in tesco cos its all grown round here and fish is cheap because loads is caught round here. Fishmongers, green grocers and butchers can't compete. People are broke so they are going to shop at the cheapest place and thats the supermarket

I live in the largest urban area in Cornwall, it's not a city and there's still fuck all cheaper than Aldi and Tesco
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:42, closed)

so I don't know how there is only one within 40 miles.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:48, closed)

I said my nearest city only had one butchers. I can also guarantee you that all 10 of them are more expensive than the supermarket.
I think its more accurate to say "don't shop at the supermarket, it might cost you a bit more overall but what you get isn't so shit."
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:58, closed)

I never suggested everyone should go to a city to do their shopping. Monster Munch started by supposing I thought everyone should do their shopping in a village. I live in a suburban council estate and I still manage to get by without going into supermarkets.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 21:04, closed)

that's incompatible with many people's lifestyles/living conditions.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 22:19, closed)

that non-supermarket food shops only exist in twee little villages.
I know it's workable, because I've personally been working it for the last five years, and I don't live in an especially unusual place. Granted it might not suit everybody (such as people who do live in unusual places), but it's a "money saving tip" not a fucking order. Get a grip you people. Jeez.

I can't argue with you about the fuel use if you have to drive to loads of different places, but that's Cornwall for you.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:43, closed)

guess which one is loads cheaper. As for herbs and spices we have a Julian Graves and it costs a bomb.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:48, closed)

you've lost me now. Can't help it if Redruth and Camborne are shit though. Move somewhere else if you don't like it, no point getting all grumpy at me.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:50, closed)

Oh and I never said I didn't like it, I said most stuff is still cheaper at a supermarket.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 20:50, closed)

The fact it's crammed into the gaps between three large urban areas may have something to do with this.
( , Fri 11 Nov 2011, 19:59, closed)

Totally agree.. not only that but I find that stuff bought at supermarkets goes off quicker too.
