Travelling to/from anywhere along the North Wales coast by Train?
Inverness to Bangor £131
Inverness to Dublin Ferryport £38
Penzance to Rhyl £135
Penzance to Dublin Ferryport £33
and get off at your preferred station. This may actually constitute breach of contract, but I'm an engineer, not a lawyer, so I'm not sure.

and penalise you if you do so even though you have used less of the resources you paid for. You're dead right, it's a shit system.

The solution is
to also buy a single ticket from the train station immediately before your destination to your destination station, and show that ticket when you get off. Costs a couple of quid extra, but no hassle.

I think you can actually
It's interesting, have a play on the national rail website. Look at tickets from where you live to places in Ireland and NI. NI approved routes go via Scotland from Sussex. You'll find it's much cheaper to get the Ireland / NI tickets and you can simply buy Glasgow Airport to Glasgow Central ticket £2.90 as your get out of jail free card. You could even buy this from a conductor.

It's also worth
breaking your journey up where you change trains. I'm travelling from London on Sunday, and by buying a ticket to Crewe, then a ticket to Bangor, I'll save about £30.

Bognor Regis - Belfast £49 Goes via sleeper service to Glasgow
Bognor Regis - Glasgow £135
It's worth looking at buying tickets for destinations across the Irish Sea if you're going to be spending more than £50 on a train ticket.
