This is a question Shoplifting

When I was young and impressionable and on holiday in France, I followed some friends into a sweet shop and we each stole something. I was so mortified by this, I returned them.

My lack of French hampered this somewhat - they had no idea why the small English boy wanted to add some chews to the open box, and saw it as an attempt by a nasty foreigner oik to contaminate their stock. Not my best day.

What have you lifted?

Train fare evasion
Yes, it is only tenuously connected, but I can say I've never knowingly stolen from a shop so this'll have to do.

Often my other half and I, travelling to see each other, would buy a Saver Return. The return portion was valid for a month. Simplicity itself to have a return portion for journeying in each direction. Simple but effective.

My justification? It's so bloody expensive anyway. I don't like doing it but I wouldn't be able to afford to see her otherwise.

I'm still
travelling on a student concession even though I stopped my coursework about eight months ago and both the Centrelink health care card and the Monash student card are officially invalid... but very conveniently have a printed expiry date of Feb 08, which is enough for ticket inspectors.

I probably won't do this for the next monthly ticket, bringing my pubic transport costs up to $100 a month fucking fuck. (On the other hand that's $3.20 a day which is the same as the concession daily, and you can go anywhere in Melbourne. On the other hand, you're in Melbourne.)

I bought it from a skeevy junkie for $50

My sister
caught the train every day to University. She bought a ticket from the counter only once - her first day. Every day after that she simply didn't bother. Every time the chappie came along selling the full-price tickets on board, she got one. The vast majority of the time she got off scott-free.

I blame her for the expense of my current commute.

Fare dodging eh?
Piss easy... and I don't feel an ounce of guilt. Not one, mainly because the prices are extortionate, the trains are rarely if ever on time and usually they're dirty as hell. Further to this, the train companies pare back on everything they can- maximum profit for minimum effort. I always carry a book and mp3 player with me for the express purpose of fare dodging, and sufficient cash in case I get asked. Mainly because the fare conductors are in some ways like the ravenous bug-blatter beast of Traal- if you can't see them, they can't see you. Of course since I started getting season tickets the point is somewhat moot...
